California Rep. Eric Swalwell Enters Crowded Race for Governor

Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell has officially entered the race for California governor, announcing his candidacy during an appearance on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Thursday night. The six-term congressman from Northern California positioned himself as a fighter for the state’s residents amid mounting economic challenges.

“Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector,” Swalwell told Kimmel’s audience. “Someone who will bring prices down, lift wages up.”

Swalwell, 43, gained national prominence as one of the House managers during former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial in 2021. During his announcement, he didn’t shy away from referencing his history of confrontation with Trump, saying he was ready “to bring this fight home.”

On his campaign website, Swalwell struck a defiant tone against the incoming Trump administration. “Our state is under attack,” he wrote, claiming Trump has “militarized our streets, canceled cancer research, zeroed out clean energy climate projects, and is chasing our immigrant friends and neighbors through their workplaces, kids’ schools, and houses of worship.”

The timing of Swalwell’s announcement on Kimmel’s show carried additional significance, coming just days after Trump renewed attacks on both ABC and Kimmel. The former president had urged the network to “get the bum off the air” in a social media post Thursday, referencing a controversy from September when Kimmel was temporarily suspended for remarks following the assassination of GOP activist Charlie Kirk.

First elected to Congress in 2012, Swalwell represents California’s 14th congressional district in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. His political ambitions have extended beyond the House before—he briefly sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 before dropping out and endorsing Joe Biden.

Swalwell now enters an already crowded field of candidates seeking to succeed term-limited Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. The race features several high-profile Democrats, including billionaire businessman and climate activist Tom Steyer, former Representative Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. Two Republican candidates have also declared their intentions to run.

California’s unique election system will see all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, competing in an all-party primary scheduled for June. The top two vote-getters will then advance to the November general election, potentially setting up either an intraparty contest between two Democrats or a traditional partisan showdown if a Republican manages to secure one of the top spots.

The gubernatorial race comes at a critical time for California, which faces significant challenges including a housing affordability crisis, persistent homelessness, water management issues, and concerns about public safety and crime. The state’s next leader will also have to navigate California’s role as a progressive counterweight to federal policies under the incoming Trump administration.

Swalwell’s entry injects new energy into an already competitive race that will determine who leads the nation’s most populous state and the world’s fifth-largest economy. Political analysts note that his congressional experience and national profile could help him stand out, though he will need to distinguish himself from other progressive candidates in the field while addressing voters’ concerns about day-to-day economic issues.

As the campaign unfolds in the coming months, voters will have the opportunity to evaluate how Swalwell’s fighting spirit translates into specific policy proposals for California’s future.

Interesting to see Swalwell throwing his hat in the ring for California governor. As a House manager during Trump’s second impeachment, he’s no stranger to high-profile political battles. It’ll be fascinating to see how his progressive platform resonates with voters.

As a six-term congressman, Swalwell brings legislative experience to the table. But transitioning from the House to the governor’s mansion is a big leap. He’ll need to demonstrate strong executive leadership skills to convince voters he’s up for the challenge.

    • That’s a good point. Swalwell will have to prove he can effectively manage the state’s complex bureaucracy and forge bipartisan coalitions, not just engage in partisan battles.

  3. Michael Martin on

Given California’s economic challenges, Swalwell’s focus on bringing down prices and lifting wages could resonate with many residents. However, he’ll face a crowded field of candidates – it’ll be important to see how he distinguishes himself from the pack.

Absolutely. Swalwell will need to articulate a clear, compelling vision that differentiates him from the other contenders. Voters will be looking for bold, practical solutions to the state’s pressing issues.

Swalwell’s focus on fighting for Californians against outside attacks could resonate, but he’ll have to back that up with a clear, comprehensive policy platform. Voters will want to see specific proposals, not just rhetoric.

  5. Swalwell’s history of confrontation with Trump could galvanize progressive voters, but it may also alienate more moderate Californians. He’ll have to strike the right balance between principled stands and pragmatic policymaking.
