Progressive Lawmaker Pushes to Limit U.S. Support for Israeli Operations in Lebanon

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Representative Rashida Tlaib has introduced a resolution that would prevent President Donald Trump from participating in or assisting Israeli military operations in Lebanon without congressional approval. The measure, which could be brought to the House floor when lawmakers return to session in mid-April, marks a shift in focus for progressive Democrats after previous failed attempts to block Trump’s military action in Iran.

The Michigan Democrat, who is the only Palestinian-American serving in Congress, has garnered support for her resolution from progressive colleagues, including Representatives Delia Ramirez of Illinois and Nydia Velazquez of New York.

Notably absent from Tlaib’s resolution is any mention of Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based terror group that has been launching rocket attacks against Israel since the beginning of the broader regional conflict. The Iran-backed militia joined the war against Israel following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

“This ethnic cleansing campaign is only possible because of U.S. support, funded by our tax dollars,” Tlaib stated. “We must act now to stop these crimes against humanity and illegal invasion of Lebanon.”

When contacted by Fox News about whether she condemned Hezbollah’s strikes on Israel, a spokesperson for Tlaib did not respond to the inquiry.

The conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border has intensified in recent months. Hezbollah has conducted numerous attacks on northern Israel, including a coordinated strike with Iran in March that involved cluster munitions. Israel has responded with counterstrikes and a major ground offensive in southern Lebanon, aimed at pushing Hezbollah beyond the range from which it can threaten Israeli communities.

While the United States has not directly joined the military conflict, American support for Israel has been substantial through weapons transfers, intelligence sharing, and diplomatic backing.

Tlaib’s move comes on the heels of a bipartisan resolution that failed in the House earlier in March, which had sought to limit Trump’s military authority in Iran. The timing suggests a strategic pivot by progressive lawmakers to focus on U.S. involvement in the Israeli-Lebanese conflict instead.

In addition to the war powers resolution, Tlaib has introduced a separate measure that would direct the Trump administration to pressure Israel to end its military campaign in Lebanon and halt all weapons transfers to the country. This second resolution also makes no reference to Hezbollah but accuses Israel of committing “crimes against humanity and genocide” in Lebanon.

“The United States is coauthoring this destruction through the weapons, intelligence, logistics, and diplomatic cover it provides the Israeli Government,” states the resolution.

The escalation in Lebanon comes amid the broader regional conflict that erupted after Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel. While Israeli forces have significantly weakened Hezbollah’s capabilities, the group continues to pose a serious threat. Earlier in March, Hezbollah rocket fire killed two Israeli civilians in northern Israel, demonstrating the ongoing danger to civilian populations.

Tlaib has long been a vocal critic of Israel and has previously faced scrutiny regarding alleged ties to foreign terrorist entities, claims she has denied.

The House is expected to address these resolutions when it returns from recess, potentially forcing lawmakers to take positions on U.S. involvement in the increasingly complex Middle Eastern conflict during an election year.
