Pregnancy Resource Centers See Record Client Numbers Following Dobbs Ruling

Facilities designed to discourage abortion have experienced a significant surge in clients since the Supreme Court’s landmark Dobbs decision, according to a study released Monday by the Charlotte Lozier Institute.

The report, published by the research arm of SBA Pro-Life America, reveals that pregnancy resource centers across the United States served more than one million clients in 2024 for the first time. This marks a notable increase from 974,965 clients in 2022, the year when the Supreme Court overturned the federal right to abortion and returned regulatory authority to individual states.

Analyzing data from approximately 3,000 facilities nationwide, researchers found these centers invested nearly half a billion dollars supporting pregnant women and new mothers. The monetary value of material assistance provided—including diapers, strollers, and cribs—increased by 48% compared to 2022 levels.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, told reporters on Monday that these centers have become increasingly vital in the post-Dobbs landscape, particularly as abortion pills become more accessible through mail-order services.

“Pregnancy resource centers have become even more important, especially with the horrific national policy that we have on the abortion drug which has led to the increase of abortions to around 1.1 million,” Dannenfelser said.

She contrasted the approach of these centers with abortion providers like Planned Parenthood, claiming the latter offers minimal support beyond providing abortion pills. “You have a Planned Parenthood organization and a big abortion movement that, to the problem of addiction, says when she enters a clinic, or she goes online, ‘Here’s your pill. Have a nice life,'” Dannenfelser stated.

The Charlotte Lozier Institute report indicates that pregnancy resource centers address underlying issues that may lead women to consider abortion, including addiction, domestic abuse, homelessness, and economic instability. These facilities offer various services ranging from material assistance to adoption referrals, counseling, and medical care.

Medical services provided at these centers include pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, STD screening, and controversial procedures like abortion pill reversal—a protocol not endorsed by major medical organizations.

However, pregnancy resource centers have faced significant criticism, particularly from abortion rights advocates who allege they mislead clients and donors about their anti-abortion stance and medical capabilities. This controversy has reached the Supreme Court, which will hear oral arguments next month in a case challenging these centers’ practices.

The report also highlights findings that more than 60% of women who have had abortions would have preferred to give birth had they received additional emotional and financial support.

“When we have the courage to ask the questions of real women in the real world, this is what we find over and over and over again,” Dannenfelser said.

The rise in pregnancy resource center clients comes amid ongoing national debate about abortion access following the Dobbs decision. While these centers have expanded their reach and resources, abortion rates have reportedly increased to approximately 1.1 million annually, which pro-life advocates attribute partly to easier access to abortion medication.

This growth in both pregnancy resource center utilization and abortion rates illustrates the complex landscape of reproductive health services in post-Dobbs America, where state laws vary dramatically and both sides of the abortion debate continue to adapt their strategies and service models.
