Illinois GOP Gubernatorial Candidates Call for Fraud Investigations Amid Minnesota Scandal

Republican candidates for Illinois governor are demanding increased scrutiny of the state’s social service programs, citing concerns over potential fraud and mismanagement under Democratic Governor JB Pritzker’s administration. The calls come in the wake of Minnesota’s widespread welfare fraud scandal that has rocked the administration of Governor Tim Walz.

Pritzker, heir to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, publicly defended Walz after the Minnesota governor announced he would not seek a third term amid the growing scandal, calling him a “friend” and expressing gratitude for his “service and sacrifice.”

Darren Bailey, currently leading in the Republican primary race, announced plans to establish a “DOGE for Illinois” program if elected in November. His running mate, Palatine city legislator Aaron Del Mar, would be appointed as “Illinois DOGE Czar” to spearhead efforts aimed at exposing government waste, fraud, and abuse.

“This will be a transparency-first project,” Bailey said in a statement. The former state senator from the Effingham area specified that the initiative would not utilize a “chainsaw” approach like federal DOGE chief Elon Musk, but rather an “X-Acto knife” for precision.

Meanwhile, fellow Republican candidate Ted Dabrowski has publicly called for Pritzker to submit to a comprehensive audit of social services, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Dabrowski, the former president of Chicago-based financial research firm Wirepoints, highlighted a nearly 300% increase in disbursements to childcare social services since 2019.

“At the bottom of all these crazy budgets, all these deficits, all these tax hikes are everyday Illinoisans who are just getting whacked,” Dabrowski stated at a recent press conference addressing Illinois’ tax woes under Pritzker’s oversight.

The Republican candidate pointed to reports of Chicago residents on the West and South Sides burning their tax forms after seeing increases of up to 100%. He emphasized that unlike the federal government, Illinois cannot print money and must instead rely on taxpayers to fund its operations and debt.

Pritzker’s campaign has firmly rejected these accusations. Campaign spokesman Alex Gough dismissed Bailey’s proposal, telling local media that Bailey “echoes Trump’s lies, copies Trump’s dangerous ideas and wants to bring Trump’s chaos to Illinois.” When asked about Dabrowski’s audit plan, Gough replied, “Good luck with that,” suggesting the Republican candidate was opposing state support for people with disabilities.

The push for audits comes at a particularly sensitive time, as the federal Department of Health and Human Services has already frozen funding for childcare services in Illinois. Despite this action, Pritzker has defended the state’s existing controls, asserting that agencies “operate within robust procedures and protocol to prevent, report and address alleged fraud,” according to the Jacksonville Journal-Courier.

U.S. Representative Mary Miller (R-Ill.) has also weighed in on the controversy, suggesting the level of fraud in Illinois would be “stunning” if properly investigated. “The fact that JB Pritzker refuses to release the voter rolls, the SNAP rolls, the Medicaid rolls [shows] he doesn’t want us to uncover the layers of corruption and abuse of taxpayers that is going on in Illinois,” Miller claimed.

The congresswoman vowed to use her position to apply pressure on Pritzker’s administration, warning that Congress “controls the purse” and threatening to “cut off funding to any states that refuse to comply” with federal audit requests.

This controversy unfolds as former USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins had previously called for all states to allow federal audits of their SNAP programs, a demand that was largely rejected by Democratic governors across the country.

As the November election approaches, the debate over government transparency and accountability in Illinois is likely to intensify, with Republican candidates positioning themselves as watchdogs against potential financial mismanagement in state-run social service programs.
