Wiener responded by stating, “We want everyone to be safe. And we also know that we have trans people, both men and women — who are men and women.” He then added, “So trans women are women.”

Hyman interrupted to acknowledge her appreciation for much of Wiener’s legislative work but insisted that this particular issue deserved his attention. “I’m telling you now, millions of women across America are being harassed and sexually assaulted in locker rooms,” she said.

She emphasized her identity as “a lesbian black woman” and clarified that she is neither “transphobic” nor “homophobic,” but expressed concern that some of Wiener’s legislative initiatives could potentially endanger women and children.
