Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman hospitalized after fall, his office says

U.S. Senator John Fetterman was hospitalized Thursday following what his office described as a “ventricular fibrillation flare-up” that occurred during an early morning walk, causing him to feel light-headed and fall.

The 56-year-old Pennsylvania Democrat is currently under observation at a Pittsburgh hospital, where he is reportedly doing well despite sustaining minor facial injuries in the fall. According to his office, doctors are working to adjust his medication regimen while keeping him under routine observation.

This incident highlights ongoing health challenges for Fetterman, who has been open about his medical history since suffering a stroke during his 2022 Senate campaign. The American Heart Association describes ventricular fibrillation as the most serious form of abnormal heartbeat, which can potentially lead to cardiac arrest or sudden cardiac death if left untreated.

Medical experts explain that ventricular fibrillation affects the heart’s lower chambers and can be caused by cardiomyopathy, a condition Fetterman was diagnosed with in 2022. Cardiomyopathy can impede blood flow and potentially cause life-threatening irregular heartbeats.

Following his stroke two years ago, Fetterman revealed he had been diagnosed with both cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation, another type of irregular heartbeat that affects the heart’s upper chambers. His medical team determined that the stroke was caused by a blood clot triggered by this atrial fibrillation condition.

As part of his treatment, Fetterman underwent surgery to implant a pacemaker with a defibrillator to manage his cardiac conditions. The devices are designed to monitor heart rhythm and deliver electrical impulses when necessary to maintain proper heart function.

The stroke also left Fetterman with ongoing neurological effects, specifically an auditory processing disorder that makes it more difficult for him to quickly process spoken conversation into meaning and speak fluently. This condition has been visible during his public appearances and Senate proceedings, where he sometimes uses assistive technology to help with communication.

Fetterman’s health journey has included other significant challenges. Just weeks after taking office in 2023, he checked himself into a hospital for treatment of clinical depression. After a six-week inpatient stay, he returned to his Senate duties and has since become an outspoken advocate for mental health treatment, urging those suffering from depression to seek professional help.

Health professionals note that post-stroke depression is a common complication affecting many stroke survivors. It is typically treatable through a combination of medication and talk therapy, as Fetterman’s case has demonstrated.
