Democratic Senate hopeful Graham Platner faced widespread criticism Wednesday after declaring that “dismantling ICE” represents a “moderate position” following a fatal shooting incident in Minneapolis involving federal immigration authorities.

The controversial remarks came after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis. According to Department of Homeland Security officials, Good blocked a road where law enforcement was operating and appeared to “weaponize her vehicle” against officers, an action the department characterized as “an act of domestic terrorism.”

“When you send armed, under-trained amateurs into American communities with vague orders and no accountability, this is inevitable,” Platner wrote on social media platform X, accompanied by a video of the incident. In a follow-up post, he escalated his rhetoric: “Dismantling ICE is the moderate position. Unmask these thugs, arrest them, and make them answer for these horrors.”

The Maine Democrat’s comments align with sentiments expressed by Minneapolis officials. City Council members described the incident as an “attack” and demanded that ICE “immediately leave our city so we can get rid of their chaos and violence that ended the life of one of our neighbors today.” Progressive Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey used profanity when telling immigration authorities to leave his city.

Platner’s statements quickly drew rebuke from conservative commentators and political opponents. Tim Graham of the Media Research Center responded bluntly: “This guy doesn’t know moderate.” Brianna Lyman, an elections correspondent at The Federalist, suggested Platner was “calling for the weaponization of the justice system against ICE at minimum.”

The incident has reignited the contentious national debate over immigration enforcement tactics and the role of federal agencies in local communities. Following the shooting, protesters gathered in Minneapolis, including at a courthouse where demonstrators banged on glass doors and windows while chanting “ICE Out Now!”

This is not the first time Platner has courted controversy. The progressive candidate has previously faced scrutiny over a chest tattoo that critics claimed resembled a Nazi “Totenkopf” or “death’s head” symbol. Platner has denied these allegations, stating he has made his stance against Nazism clear. He also recently drew criticism for self-identifying as a “communist” in now-deleted Reddit posts, comments he later dismissed as “internet shitposting.”

As Platner seeks the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine’s 2026 election, his comments about ICE highlight the growing divide within American politics regarding immigration policy and enforcement. His position represents the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party, which has increasingly called for significant reforms or complete restructuring of immigration enforcement agencies.

The Minneapolis shooting incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration policy nationwide. The debate has intensified in recent years as communities grapple with questions about the appropriate scope and methods of immigration enforcement, the rights of undocumented individuals, and the relationship between federal agencies and local governments.

Alabama Senate candidate Morgan Murphy captured the political divide succinctly in his response to Platner: “The same liberals who wanted to defund the police want to dismantle ICE. Absolutely not: stand with ICE. Stand with law enforcement.”

As investigations into the Minneapolis shooting continue, Platner’s comments underscore how immigration enforcement remains one of the most polarizing issues in American politics, with significant implications for the upcoming election cycle.

While the desire to hold law enforcement accountable is understandable, calls to dismantle a major federal agency like ICE seem like an overreaction. A more measured approach focused on policy reforms and improved training/oversight could be more productive.

  2. This is a complex and sensitive issue. I would encourage the public to withhold judgment until all the facts are known and to seek out reliable, objective information from authoritative sources.

That’s a fair point. Rushing to conclusions or making sweeping accusations is unlikely to lead to meaningful solutions. A calm, fact-based dialogue is needed.

  3. Emma F. Thomas on

Dismantling a major federal agency like ICE is an extreme position that would have significant consequences. While reforms may be warranted, this kind of rhetoric is more likely to further polarize the debate than find common ground.

    • William Miller on

I agree that this is a very charged political issue. Perhaps we could move the discussion towards specific policy proposals that address concerns while maintaining necessary law enforcement functions.

  4. Jennifer Thompson on

The use of force by law enforcement is always a sensitive topic. I would encourage a thorough investigation to understand the full context and circumstances before rushing to judgment on this particular incident.

    • Elijah S. Lopez on

That’s a fair point. Premature conclusions can inflame tensions, when a careful, evidence-based review would be more constructive.

  5. Ava Rodriguez on

While the details of this incident are concerning, calling for the dismantling of ICE is a polarizing and extreme position that is unlikely to gain broad support. A more measured approach focused on accountability and policy reform would be more constructive.

    • William Johnson on

I agree that a nuanced discussion around reforming immigration enforcement is needed, rather than inflammatory rhetoric. Reasonable people can disagree on the best path forward.
