Former Vice President Mike Pence is urging congressional Republicans to extend a ban on federal funding for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers before it expires on July 4, warning that failure to act would result in taxpayer dollars flowing to these organizations on Independence Day.

“Congressional Republicans must deliver for pro-life Americans by extending the ban on federal funding for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers,” Pence told Fox News Digital in exclusive comments. “If Congress does not act, Planned Parenthood will celebrate America’s 250th birthday with taxpayer funding. Renewed federal funding for Planned Parenthood is unacceptable to me and to millions of pro-life Americans across the United States.”

Pence’s call to action comes alongside a new policy roadmap from his conservative think tank, the Advancing American Freedom Foundation (AAFF), which outlines 20 key legislative priorities for an upcoming “Reconciliation 2.0” package.

The current temporary ban on Medicaid funding for abortion providers was initially passed as part of a sweeping legislative package known as the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). Without congressional intervention, this funding restriction will expire on July 4.

The AAFF memo provides Republican lawmakers with strategies to either permanently ban or extend the temporary pause on taxpayer funding for abortion providers. One alternative approach suggested in the policy document recommends implementing a new tax on abortion providers that would match the exact amount of Medicaid funds they receive in a given year, effectively neutralizing any federal funding.

While abortion funding restrictions represent a cornerstone of Pence’s current push, the AAFF roadmap extends well beyond this single issue, proposing 19 additional conservative policy priorities. These include measures targeting companies that hire undocumented immigrants, implementing stricter citizenship and address verification for voters, and repealing subsidies for renewable energy initiatives.

The former vice president’s plan also advocates for expanding tax-advantaged “Trump Accounts” for children’s savings, creating financial incentives for states that adopt school choice programs, and implementing penalties for states that distribute fraudulent or improper Medicaid and welfare payments as a method of reducing federal spending.

“By sending 20 solid, conservative policy proposals to Congress that will help eliminate waste, fraud and abuse; strengthen election integrity; and expand on the tax policy wins of the One Big Beautiful Bill, the policy team at Advancing American Freedom Foundation continues to directly impact the day-to-day policy debate in Washington, D.C.,” Pence stated.

The timing of this policy push is significant as it comes during an election year when reproductive rights and abortion access remain highly contentious political issues. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, state-level abortion restrictions have proliferated across the country, while progressive states have moved to strengthen abortion protections.

Pence, who has maintained a consistently conservative position on abortion throughout his political career, appears to be leveraging his policy foundation to maintain influence within Republican policy circles even after his unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign.

“Policy memos from dedicated conservative think tanks are essential to advancing conservative policy through the legislative process,” he added. “I trust that representatives and senators and their policy teams will continue to find AAF’s memos as their go-to resource for need-to-know information on policy.”

The stakes of this funding debate extend beyond the immediate question of Planned Parenthood. The organization provides a range of reproductive health services beyond abortion, including contraception, cancer screenings, and STI testing. Supporters argue these services are essential for low-income patients who rely on Medicaid, while opponents maintain that any funding to the organization indirectly supports abortion services.

As the July 4 deadline approaches, the issue is likely to intensify partisan divisions in Congress, with pro-life advocates pressuring Republicans to take action while reproductive rights supporters rally Democrats to resist these efforts.
