Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, who defended the Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riot, has received a high-profile endorsement in his congressional bid from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi, who is not seeking re-election herself, threw her support behind Dunn in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District Democratic primary race, calling him “a true American hero” in a statement released this week.

“On January 6, 2021, Harry Dunn bravely defended our democracy from Donald Trump’s violent MAGA mob,” Pelosi said. “Since then, Harry’s been called to do everything he can to protect Marylanders and all Americans from extremists like Donald Trump. I’m proud to endorse Harry Dunn for Congress.”

Dunn, in response, praised Pelosi for standing firm “when our democracy was under attack” and for helping “lead the country through one of the most difficult moments in our history.”

This marks Pelosi’s second endorsement of Dunn’s congressional ambitions. She previously backed his unsuccessful 2024 campaign in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District, where he failed to secure the Democratic nomination.

The seat Dunn now seeks is being vacated by longtime Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election. Hoyer, who has represented Maryland’s 5th Congressional District for over four decades and served in various House leadership positions including Majority Leader, has endorsed his former campaign manager, Maryland Delegate Adrian Boafo, for the position.

Hoyer’s departure represents the end of an era in Maryland politics and in the House Democratic leadership. Along with Pelosi, he was part of the party’s senior leadership team for years, helping shape Democratic policy and strategy through multiple administrations.

Dunn’s candidacy carries significant symbolism given his role during the Capitol riot. As a Capitol Police officer that day, he faced violent protesters who stormed the building as Congress was certifying the 2020 presidential election results. He later testified before the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack about his experiences, including facing racial slurs and physical threats.

After leaving the Capitol Police force, Dunn has positioned himself as a defender of democratic institutions. His campaign is likely to emphasize his firsthand experience protecting Congress during one of its most perilous moments in modern history.

The Democratic primary for Maryland’s 5th Congressional District is expected to be competitive, with several candidates vying for the nomination in a district that has been a reliable Democratic stronghold. The primary will determine who advances to the general election in a seat that Democrats are favored to retain.

Maryland’s 5th District encompasses parts of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties, as well as all of Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert counties. The diverse district includes Washington, D.C. suburbs, rural areas, and military installations including portions of Joint Base Andrews.

Pelosi’s endorsement could provide Dunn with increased visibility and fundraising potential in what is expected to be a crowded field. Her backing carries particular weight given her stature as the first female Speaker of the House and her continued influence within the Democratic Party.

The Maryland congressional primaries are scheduled for later this year, with the general election to follow in November, determining who will succeed Hoyer when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.

  1. While Dunn’s heroism on January 6th is commendable, I’m not convinced that alone qualifies him for a seat in Congress. Voters should scrutinize his policy positions and leadership abilities before making a decision.

    • I agree. Dunn’s experience is notable, but he’ll need to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the issues facing the district and a clear vision for how to address them. Voters should look beyond the January 6th narrative.

Agreed, Dunn seems like a principled candidate who will fight for his constituents. It’s important to have representatives in Congress who put country over party.

  5. It’s concerning that Pelosi is throwing her weight behind a former Capitol Police officer. Dunn may have been a hero on January 6th, but that doesn’t necessarily make him the best candidate for Congress.

While I respect Dunn’s service, I’m a bit skeptical of Pelosi’s motives here. Is this just political theater, or does she genuinely believe Dunn is the best candidate to represent Maryland’s 5th district?

    • Noah Martinez on

That’s a fair concern. Pelosi’s endorsement could be more about scoring political points than truly supporting the most qualified candidate. Voters should scrutinize Dunn’s platform and qualifications.

  8. Pelosi’s endorsement of Dunn is an interesting move, but I’m more curious to hear directly from the candidate about his policy priorities and vision for the district. Voters should focus on the substance, not just the political theater.

    • Lucas Martinez on

Well said. Dunn’s record and platform should be the focus, not the endorsements he receives. Voters deserve to make an informed choice based on the candidate’s merits, not just party affiliations.
