A nonprofit advocacy group is calling on the Trump administration to implement stronger healthcare price transparency measures as the White House prepares to unveil a new healthcare proposal.
PatientsRightsAdvocate.org (PRA), a nonpartisan organization focused on healthcare price transparency, sent a letter to President Trump on Tuesday urging immediate action to provide patients with clear information about healthcare costs upfront.
“You recently articulated a compelling vision: Americans, not insurance companies, should be in control of their healthcare dollars,” wrote PRA founder Cynthia Fisher in the letter. “Empowering people directly is the most effective way to restore fairness, choice, and accountability to a system that has too long served corporate interests instead of the American people.”
The organization is specifically requesting that the Department of Labor ensure employers who provide healthcare benefits receive full access to claims data, provider payment information, and fee breakdowns. This transparency would enable employers to negotiate lower costs, ultimately reducing healthcare expenses for their employees.
PRA also encouraged Trump to support the bipartisan Patients Deserve Price Tags Act, sponsored by Senators Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) and John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.). This legislation would require hospitals to disclose actual prices for approximately 300 common services and mandate that healthcare providers create detailed, itemized bills for each service rendered.
“By doing this, you will deliver a system in which patients, employers, and unions — not the insurance and private equity fat cats — hold the power,” Fisher stated in her letter.
These proposed actions would build upon previous Trump administration initiatives. In February, Trump signed an executive order directing the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services departments to enforce transparency regulations requiring hospitals and insurers to share actual healthcare prices rather than estimates. The order also pushed for more uniform pricing across healthcare providers and insurance companies.
The advocacy comes at a critical time as the White House is expected to release a comprehensive healthcare plan soon. While there were indications the plan might be released as early as Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt did not provide a specific timeline, only stating that healthcare remains a priority for the president.
The forthcoming healthcare proposal emerges as Republicans grapple with the pending expiration of Affordable Care Act subsidies at the end of 2025. This issue was central to the government shutdown standoff in October, when Democrats initially refused to support funding measures that did not include permanent extensions of these subsidies.
Though Democrats eventually backed a short-term spending bill without the subsidy extensions, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has committed to holding a vote in December on legislation that would continue these healthcare credits.
Public sentiment strongly favors greater healthcare price transparency. According to a September poll by Echelon Insights, a Republican-leaning data firm, nearly 90% of American voters support regulations requiring hospitals and insurance companies to disclose exact prices upfront.
“The data I’ve seen is crystal clear: If President Trump executes on this affordability action by forcing hospitals and insurers to reveal actual prices upfront, the American people will overwhelmingly support it,” said Republican campaign strategist David Kochel. “This isn’t just good policy, but a potential game-changer heading into 2026 and beyond. By tackling one of the clearest pain points in surprise medical bills and hiding pricing, Republicans can shift the narrative on healthcare, win back trust and deliver real results that voters can feel.”
