NYC Mayor’s Wife Under Scrutiny for Past Social Media Posts Celebrating Terrorists
Rama Duwaji, the 28-year-old wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, faces growing criticism over a series of social media posts from her teenage years and early twenties that appear to celebrate terrorists and express anti-Israel sentiments.
According to a Washington Free Beacon report, Duwaji’s controversial posts date back to when she was as young as 17 years old. In September 2017, she posted a photo on her Tumblr account of Leila Khaled, a prominent leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), who participated in two plane hijackings in 1969 and 1970. The caption read, “If it does good for my cause, I’ll be happy to accept death.” Khaled has the distinction of being the first woman to hijack an airplane and is celebrated among certain extremist groups.
Born in Houston to Syrian heritage, Duwaji spent her early childhood in New Jersey before her family relocated to Dubai. The posts in question were made primarily during her late teens and early twenties, a period when many young people are forming political identities.
In March 2015, at age 17, she reposted content on International Women’s Day praising Shadia Abu Ghazaleh, who participated in the bombing of an Israeli bus and led several other terrorist attacks. The image showed Ghazaleh posing with a rifle. Ghazaleh was killed in 1968 when a bomb she was constructing in her home accidentally detonated—a device allegedly intended for a building in Tel Aviv.
Other controversial posts included imagery of Palestinian resistance, such as someone wearing keffiyeh clothing while sewing a Palestinian Liberation Organization flag during the first Intifada in 1988, and a Bangladeshi postage stamp with the message, “We salute the valiant freedom fighters of Palestine.”
In July 2015, she shared content criticizing the U.S. military presence abroad, stating: “American soldiers fighting in imperialist wars are not brave nor are they fighting for anyone’s freedom. They are mercilessly slaughtering 3rd world civilians and fighting to maintain American hegemony.”
Duwaji, who married Mamdani in 2025, first drew national attention after reports emerged that she had liked several social media posts in the immediate aftermath of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. The attack resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths, including young children. She allegedly liked an Instagram post showing images from participants who livestreamed footage of the onslaught.
In February 2024, she reportedly liked an Instagram post claiming that The New York Times’ investigation into sexual violence during the October 7 attack was “fabricated.”
These revelations come at a sensitive time for Mayor Mamdani, who has already faced criticism for his policies regarding Israel. Recently, a city-run board canceled a lease with an Israeli drone supplier, sparking backlash toward the mayor. Additionally, Israeli officials have accused Mamdani of pouring “antisemitic gasoline” after he revoked several executive orders put in place by the previous administration.
The controversy surrounding Duwaji adds another dimension to the ongoing tensions in New York City regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has divided communities and sparked heated debates about antisemitism, Islamophobia, and the appropriate role of city leadership in addressing international conflicts.
The mayor’s office has not responded to requests for comment regarding the social media posts attributed to Duwaji.
