Homeland Security Secretary Rebukes Celebrity Criticism of ICE at Grammy Awards

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has pushed back against celebrities who criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during Sunday’s Grammy Awards ceremony, calling their comments “ill-informed” and defending the agency’s role in American communities.

“I wish they knew what wonderful, amazing people our ICE officers are,” Noem told Fox News Digital during an interview at a Mississippi National Guard facility in Tupelo on Monday. The Secretary was visiting the region to meet with the governor, FEMA officials, and military personnel in the aftermath of Winter Storm Fern.

Several high-profile artists used their acceptance speeches during music’s biggest night to criticize ICE and immigration enforcement policies under the Trump administration. Billie Eilish, while accepting Song of the Year, wore an “ICE OUT” pin and declared, “No one is illegal on stolen land,” before adding, “And f— ICE, that’s all I’m gonna say, sorry.”

Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny made similar comments when accepting the Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album, stating, “ICE out. We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens — we’re humans, and we’re Americans.”

Noem defended ICE officers, emphasizing their connection to the communities they serve. “Many of these officers live in these communities where they are doing enforcement activities. Their families live there and that’s their neighbors they are protecting by getting dangerous criminals off the streets,” she said.

The Secretary linked current immigration enforcement strategies to the administration’s broader public safety goals. “They are going after those murderers and rapists, people that are trafficking drugs, and protecting America,” Noem continued. “That is what President Trump said he would do, he said he would make us safer, and he has done that.”

The clash highlights the ongoing tensions around immigration policy, which has been a signature issue for the Trump administration. Since returning to office, President Trump has implemented stricter enforcement measures at the border and within the interior of the country, leading to increased deportation operations.

Critics of these policies, including many in the entertainment industry, have argued that the enforcement actions separate families and target vulnerable populations. Immigration advocates have organized numerous protests against ICE operations across the country in recent months, with demonstrations in major cities drawing thousands of participants.

The Grammy Awards have increasingly become a platform for political statements in recent years, with artists using their visibility to address social issues. This year’s ceremony was no exception, with immigration being one of several causes championed by winners and presenters throughout the evening.

Noem pointed to crime statistics to defend the administration’s approach. “We have reached historic lows in crime rates in this country, the lowest rate of murder and crime since we have been recording it for over 100 years,” she claimed. “So it’s real results, people are feeling it in their communities.”

The Secretary concluded by expressing disappointment that “ill-informed famous musicians make statements like that without truly knowing what great Americans our ICE and Border Patrol officers are.”

The controversy comes as the administration continues to implement its immigration agenda, which has included large-scale deportation operations and stricter border enforcement policies. While supporters argue these measures are necessary for national security and public safety, critics maintain they reflect a harsh approach that fails to recognize the human aspects of immigration.

As the debate over immigration policy continues, the Grammy statements reflect how deeply divided the country remains on the issue, with high-profile figures increasingly willing to take public stands on contentious political matters.
