California’s First Partner Criticizes Trump’s Treatment of Female Journalist in “60 Minutes” Interview

California’s “First Partner,” Jennifer Siebel Newsom, has publicly criticized former President Donald Trump for his contentious exchange with journalist Norah O’Donnell during a recent “60 Minutes” interview. Siebel Newsom, who is married to California Governor Gavin Newsom, expressed concern about Trump’s demeanor toward the female journalist, suggesting it reflects broader patterns of misogyny.

“My family and I watched the 60 Minutes interview with Donald Trump and Norah O’Donnell last night, and we were shocked,” Siebel Newsom wrote in a social media post on Monday. “Seeing a president speak to a woman journalist with that level of contempt — and a clear allergy to facts — is disturbing, though at this point not unexpected given his pattern of behavior.”

The interview in question aired Sunday evening and featured a heated exchange between Trump and O’Donnell regarding the recent shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. When O’Donnell read excerpts from the alleged manifesto of the shooter, 31-year-old Cole Allen from Torrance, California, Trump responded by calling her “disgraceful” and saying she “should be ashamed” for reading content that described him as a “rapist,” “pedophile,” and “traitor.”

“I was waiting for you to read that because I knew you would because you’re horrible people,” Trump said during the interview. “Horrible people. Yeah, he did write that. I’m not a rapist. I didn’t rape anybody.”

O’Donnell attempted to clarify that she was simply quoting the alleged gunman’s words, but Trump continued to call her “disgraceful” and said, “You shouldn’t be reading that on ’60 Minutes.’ You’re a disgrace. But go ahead. Let’s finish the interview.”

The exchange has sparked significant reaction across the political spectrum. Siebel Newsom, who has long advocated for gender equity issues, expressed concern about the broader cultural implications of such interactions.

“When that level of disrespect from the highest office in the country repeats itself, it starts to trickle down into our culture and define what power looks like, shaping how boys and plenty of men see women and girls and what they come to accept as normal behavior,” she wrote. “This culture of misogyny is on all of us, and it has to end.”

Siebel Newsom further argued that such rhetoric, “rooted in political division, amplified by a digital ecosystem that rewards outrage and misinformation,” leads to a “cultural norm of hate, othering, and misogyny” becoming pervasive in society.

Authorities have identified Allen as the shooting suspect at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. According to law enforcement, Allen had prepared a manifesto outlining his intent, which allegedly contained anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric. The Secret Service intervened in the attempted attack.

The interview and subsequent reactions highlight the deeply polarized nature of American politics. While Siebel Newsom and others criticized Trump’s treatment of O’Donnell, conservatives rallied around the former president.

New York Post columnist Miranda Devine defended Trump, criticizing O’Donnell’s “fake innocent surprise” when asking if Trump thought the shooter was referring to him. Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich went further, calling O’Donnell’s questioning “the low point in disgusting and inhumane demagoguery disguised as journalism” and suggesting she “should be fired for demeaning her entire profession and being the mouthpiece of a would-be killer.”

The exchange between Trump and O’Donnell comes at a time of heightened political tension in the United States, with concerns about political violence increasing following the recent shooting incident. It also underscores ongoing debates about media objectivity, journalistic practices, and the treatment of women in public discourse.

Fox News reported that requests for comment from the White House and representatives for Governor Newsom and his wife were not returned by publication time.
