West Virginia National Guard Member Shows Positive Signs After Washington Shooting

A West Virginia National Guard member who was shot last week in Washington, D.C., remains in serious condition but has demonstrated encouraging signs of responsiveness, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Monday.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was able to give a thumbs-up indicating he could hear a nurse’s question and also wiggled his toes, according to Morrisey. The injured guardsman continues to fight for his life following the attack.

“Andrew is still fighting for his life,” Morrisey said at a news conference. “Andrew needs prayers.”

The shooting claimed the life of another West Virginia National Guard member, 20-year-old U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom. Morrisey indicated he could not yet share details about Beckstrom’s funeral arrangements, expressing a desire to respect her family’s wishes during this difficult time.

The attack occurred Wednesday just blocks from the White House while the guardsmen were deployed as part of President Donald Trump’s initiative to address crime in the nation’s capital, which included federalizing D.C. police. The brazen daytime shooting has shocked the military community and raised questions about security for National Guard members serving in domestic operations.

Investigators continue working to determine a motive for the attack. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts of assault in connection with the shooting. Authorities report that Lakanwal was also shot during the confrontation and remains hospitalized, delaying any court appearance.

The incident has triggered significant policy responses from the Trump administration, which has halted all asylum decisions and paused visa issuances for individuals traveling on Afghan passports. This sweeping response underscores the political sensitivity surrounding the attack.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that President Trump requested 500 additional National Guard members be deployed to Washington. However, Governor Morrisey stated that he has not received any requests to deploy additional troops from West Virginia specifically.

The National Guard presence in Washington has been substantial, with government figures showing nearly 2,200 troops currently assigned to the joint task force operating in the city. West Virginia’s contribution began with over 300 National Guard members deployed in August as part of the federal initiative. By mid-November, approximately 170 of those service members volunteered to extend their deployment through the end of the year, while others returned to their home state.

“Our sole focus right now is looking after the well-being of the 170 service members who are on the ground, focusing on the family, assuring that prayers are going out,” Morrisey emphasized, highlighting the state’s commitment to supporting its deployed personnel and their families during this challenging period.

The shooting has renewed debates about the role of National Guard members in domestic law enforcement operations and the risks they face. It also raises questions about security protocols for Guard members operating in urban environments where they may be vulnerable to attack.

As Staff Sgt. Wolfe continues his recovery and investigations into the attack proceed, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by military personnel even when serving on American soil. State officials, military leadership, and community members across West Virginia have rallied in support of both victims and their families as they navigate the aftermath of this tragedy.
