SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Condemns Minnesota Governor Amid Widening Fraud Investigations

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk harshly criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Tuesday, calling him “Traitor Tim Walz” in a post on X as the state faces multiple investigations into alleged fraud schemes targeting its social services programs.

Musk’s comments came in response to a social media post highlighting Walz’s governance record, including tax increases and the depletion of a state budget surplus. The criticism emerges as Minnesota confronts scrutiny over several fraud investigations that have drawn national attention.

The most prominent of these investigations involves a $250 million fraud scheme known as “Feeding Our Future,” which allegedly targeted a federally funded children’s nutrition program during the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, 77 people have been charged in connection with this scheme, which exploited the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s decision to waive certain requirements for the Federal Child Nutrition Program.

A second major investigation centers on Minnesota’s Housing Stability Services Program, designed to provide Medicaid coverage for housing stabilization services to assist individuals with disabilities, mental illnesses, and substance-use disorders. The Justice Department has charged fewer than a dozen people so far for allegedly defrauding this program, though more charges are expected.

President Donald Trump has characterized Minnesota as a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” and announced in November the termination of Temporary Protected Status for Somali migrants in Minnesota. This decision came after reports that many of those charged in the fraud schemes are members of Minnesota’s Somali community.

The Department of Homeland Security intensified efforts on Tuesday by launching what it described as a “massive operation” to address the situation. “Our investigative agents are conducting a massive operation to identify, arrest, and remove criminals who are defrauding the American people. We will root out this rampant fraud plaguing Minnesota,” the agency stated on X.

The federal response gained momentum after a video posted by YouTuber Nick Shirley went viral last Friday, highlighting alleged fraud involving Minnesota childcare and learning centers. The video prompted federal authorities to launch what they described as a large-scale investigation into the claims.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has also become involved, summoning Minnesota officials as part of a congressional probe into the fraud allegations.

Governor Walz’s administration has pushed back against the accusations. A spokesperson for the governor stated that Walz has worked for years to “crack down” on fraud and has “strengthened oversight” of state programs. Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Families Commissioner Tikki Brown said during a Monday press conference that previous inspections of the childcare centers did not detect fraud, adding that regulators are conducting more unannounced visits to investigate further.

“While we have questions about some of the methods that were used in the video, we do take the concerns that the video raises about fraud very seriously,” Brown said.

The multi-pronged investigations represent a significant challenge for Walz’s administration and have implications for Minnesota’s management of federal funds. Federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Health and Human Services, are all involved in various aspects of the probes.

The scandal has broader political ramifications as well, with Republicans using the fraud allegations to criticize Democratic governance in the state. Walz’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Musk’s characterization.

As investigations continue to unfold, the full scope and impact of the alleged fraud schemes remain to be determined, leaving Minnesota officials contending with both the immediate crisis and potential long-term consequences for the state’s social service programs and federal funding.
