Congressional Probe Launches After String of Missing Scientists, High-Ranking Official
A congressional investigation into the mysterious disappearances of multiple scientists working in sensitive research fields was triggered by the vanishing of a retired Air Force general who oversaw classified military research programs, according to Representative Eric Burlison of Missouri.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Burlison revealed that the disappearance of retired Air Force General William Neil McCasland, whom he described as the “UFO general,” particularly alarmed lawmakers. McCasland vanished from his Albuquerque, New Mexico home in February, leaving behind his phone and prescription glasses.
“He was on our list to talk to, and he disappeared, so that kind of piqued our interest,” Burlison explained, noting that his staff had been attempting to contact McCasland about a separate congressional investigation before his disappearance.
McCasland, an astronautical engineer with deep expertise in aerospace and alleged UFO research, is one of 11 individuals working in nuclear or rocket technology who have died or disappeared under mysterious circumstances since 2022. When he vanished, his hiking boots, wallet, and a .38-caliber revolver were reported missing, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
While federal officials have not identified connections between the cases, the pattern has raised significant concerns in Washington. The affected individuals share backgrounds in advanced scientific research and potentially had access to sensitive information.
“I’m not going to jump to that conclusion, but it’s certainly suspicious,” Burlison said when asked if he suspected foul play in McCasland’s case. “How many people walk out their front door without their phone, their wallet, their keys, or anything? I don’t go anywhere without my phone. I don’t even mow the lawn without my phone.”
The congressman emphasized the unusual pattern emerging: “It’s just really, really strange that in about a five-month period of time, four or five people walked out their front door and never returned, and were all doing advanced aerospace research.”
On Monday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Burlison, who chairs the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs, formally launched an investigation into the disappearances. They sent letters to the FBI, Department of Defense, NASA, and Department of Energy requesting information about the missing scientists and demanding staff-level briefings by April 27.
“I want them to determine if there’s any kind of foul play,” Burlison stated, referring to the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson for the House Oversight Committee indicated they would release updates as the investigation proceeds.
NASA responded on Monday, announcing plans to convene an interagency effort to investigate the missing scientists. However, the space agency cautioned that it had not yet identified any threats. “At this time, nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat,” NASA spokeswoman Bethany Stevens wrote on X. “The agency is committed to transparency and will provide more information as it becomes available.”
The White House has also addressed the situation, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that the administration is “actively working with all relevant agencies and the FBI” to review the cases and identify potential connections.
The investigation highlights growing concerns about potential threats to America’s scientific community, particularly those working in sensitive fields like aerospace, nuclear technology, and advanced military research. As the probe unfolds, lawmakers are seeking to determine whether these disappearances are coincidental or part of a coordinated effort targeting U.S. scientific expertise.
