Minnesota Republican Senate candidate David Hann is calling for an apology from Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan following a controversial video showing her wearing a hijab and expressing support for the Somali community amid an ongoing fraud scandal.
The video, which went viral on social media last week, shows Flanagan addressing Somali constituents with “Salam alaikum” while encouraging Minnesotans to support Somali businesses. “The Somali community is part of the fabric of the state of Minnesota,” Flanagan says in the footage aired on Somali TV. “We’ve got your back,” she added, urging residents to support immigrant neighbors during what she described as a “scary time.”
Hann, a former Minnesota state senator now seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, characterized the video as political pandering rather than responsible governance.
“It’s emblematic of the way she and other Democrat politicians in Minnesota have behaved over the past decade or so. They’re very political,” Hann told Fox News Digital. “They just are pandering to political constituencies, and they’re not doing the job that they were elected to do.”
The video sparked significant backlash on conservative social media, with Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham describing it as “what political performance looks like — symbolism over accountability — while billions in taxpayer dollars vanish.”
The controversy unfolds against the backdrop of a massive fraud investigation in Minnesota that federal prosecutors suggest could total as much as $9 billion. The scandal primarily involves fraud within the state’s Somali community, and previous reporting has indicated that fears of being labeled racist may have provided cover for the fraud to expand.
Hann was explicit in his call for Flanagan to apologize and retract the video. “They did not do their duty out of concern that they would offend a political constituency,” he said. “She should apologize. She certainly should not be sent to Washington to oversee federal dollars being spent.”
In response, Flanagan’s spokesperson Alexandra Fetissoff defended the lieutenant governor’s actions, shifting focus to immigration enforcement issues: “While the Lt. Governor was showing her support for small businesses and communities being terrorized by ICE, she was handed a scarf by a friend and briefly wore it out of respect. The real outrage should not be a scarf, but masked men throwing American citizens into vans and violating the constitution.”
Fetissoff also clarified that contrary to claims circulating on social media, Flanagan did not state in the video that Somalis “built” Minnesota.
Flanagan, who has served as lieutenant governor since 2019, is currently competing in the Democratic primary race to replace outgoing Senator Tina Smith. She faces two other Democratic candidates in that contest.
The fraud scandal has already prompted legislative action at the federal level. Last week, Republican Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks introduced legislation named after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz aimed at preventing similar fraud in the future.
If elected to the Senate, Hann indicated he would push for stronger oversight measures. “I think we should also be looking at how can we reform the whole welfare establishment,” he explained. “We should be more concerned about trying to make sure people’s lives are improved, rather than just spending money.”
The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Minnesota’s response to the fraud scandal, as well as the political implications for candidates in the upcoming Senate race. It also raises questions about the balance between supporting immigrant communities and ensuring proper oversight of government programs and taxpayer funds.
