Minnesota Lawmakers Criticize Walz’s Fraud Record Claims in Final Annual Address

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is facing sharp criticism from Republican lawmakers following his final State of the State address, where his comments about the state’s massive fraud scandal sparked immediate backlash.

During his address earlier this week, Walz attempted to highlight his administration’s efforts to combat fraud in Minnesota’s social services programs. “We’ve created additional checks and balances,” Walz said. “We’ve brought on more investigators, more auditors, more law enforcement agencies, as well as an outside firm to take a look at high-risk programs. People who have ripped us off are getting caught and they are going to jail, just like today.”

The governor’s reference to “today” particularly drew fire, as it appeared to take credit for federal raids carried out across Minneapolis that same day. Federal officials have since clarified that these operations were directed and orchestrated by federal agencies, not the state government.

State Representative Kristin Robbins, chair of the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee, called Walz’s remarks “ridiculous” in an interview with Fox News Digital. “He somewhat said, ‘Oh, the buck stops with me,’ but then he immediately pivoted to blame everyone else,” Robbins stated.

The controversy occurs against the backdrop of significant fraud investigations in Minnesota’s social services programs, which have reportedly resulted in billions of dollars in losses. During his speech, Walz suggested that the state’s generous social programs made it a target for fraud, saying, “The more generous your support system, the more oversight you need to make sure people aren’t taking unfair advantage.”

Walz also called on the state legislature to adopt his plan to combat fraud, which Republicans contend will “do nothing but create more bureaucracy.” Representative Robbins countered that Republican proposals are more “serious” in addressing the underlying issues.

State Senator Mark Koran accused Walz of trying to “wallpaper over his legacy by praising his failed policies and massive government expansion,” adding that the governor “leaves behind a legacy of widespread fraud, higher taxes on Minnesota families and a reckless 40% increase in state spending.”

Senator Michael Holmstrom characterized the governor’s speech as a “farewell victory lap” but asserted that “his record of failed leadership and malfeasance will be his legacy.”

Adding to the controversy, Walz made the claim during his address that red states have more fraud than blue states, a statement that further inflamed his Republican critics.
