Minnesota Lawmaker Demands Answers from Rep. Omar Over Pandemic Fraud Scandal Links

A Minnesota Republican legislator has formally demanded Rep. Ilhan Omar provide documentation regarding her potential connections to the state’s widespread pandemic-era fraud scandal, following the Democratic congresswoman’s failure to appear at a scheduled oversight hearing.

State Rep. Kristin Robbins, who chairs the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee, sent a letter to Omar on April 22 expressing disappointment over her absence from a committee hearing focused on the Meals Act, federal COVID-19 relief legislation that Omar sponsored in 2020.

“Minnesotans and the Members of the House Fraud Prevention & State Oversight Committee were disappointed that you failed to appear before our committee to answer questions,” Robbins wrote in the letter obtained by Fox News Digital.

The committee has now escalated its inquiry, requesting extensive records from Omar’s office relating to the “Feeding Our Future” investigation, which has gained national attention for allegedly facilitating the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars in pandemic food aid intended for children.

Robbins told Fox News Digital that Omar has been unresponsive to multiple attempts at communication. “She didn’t even respond, ghosted us,” Robbins said. “And her Meals Act is what created the conditions that allowed Feeding Our Future to happen.”

The documentation request focuses on several areas of potential connection between Omar and the fraud case. Robbins is seeking all communications showing how Omar promoted expanded access to federal child nutrition programs, including emails, texts, and meeting records with the Minnesota Department of Education and constituents.

Of particular interest is Omar’s public promotion of a Minneapolis restaurant that later became linked to the scandal. During the committee meeting, lawmakers viewed a Somali-language television appearance where Omar highlighted Safari Restaurant as a meal distribution site. Robbins has requested all communications related to this video and the restaurant’s participation in the program.

The committee is also seeking records of any contact between Omar and numerous individuals charged or implicated in the case, including nonprofit founder Aimee Bock and dozens of alleged co-conspirators. Additionally, the letter raises questions about political donations Omar received from individuals later charged in the fraud investigation.

The “Feeding Our Future” scandal represents one component of what prosecutors believe to be a much larger fraud crisis potentially involving tens of billions of dollars in misappropriated pandemic relief funds. Federal authorities have described the Minnesota case as one of the largest pandemic fraud schemes in the country.

This scrutiny adds to several ongoing controversies surrounding Omar. She currently faces a possible ethics investigation regarding her personal financial disclosures, as well as accusations from prominent Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, claiming she committed immigration fraud—allegations she has previously denied.

The formal request gives Omar until May 5 to provide written responses and the requested documentation to the committee. Robbins, who is currently running for governor of Minnesota, has emphasized the importance of accountability in this case given the scale of taxpayer funds involved.

The controversy occurs against the backdrop of increasing national attention on pandemic-era fraud as federal and state authorities continue investigating the misuse of emergency relief funds distributed during the COVID-19 crisis. These inquiries have highlighted vulnerabilities in government oversight systems during times of crisis and raised questions about political connections to entities that received expedited access to government funding.

Omar’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

This story raises some concerning questions about the use of pandemic relief funds. While I don’t want to jump to conclusions, it’s worrying if there were issues with the Meals Act program that Rep. Omar sponsored. I hope the oversight committee can get clear answers.
