Congressional investigators are intensifying their probe into allegations of widespread fraud in Minnesota’s public assistance programs, raising serious questions about Governor Tim Walz’s administration and its oversight responsibilities.

The House Oversight Committee recently launched an investigation following reports that Minnesota has lost hundreds of millions of dollars to fraud schemes targeting social benefit programs. Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) expressed confidence that investigators would determine whether the governor’s office should have detected and prevented these losses.

“We want to know how much fraud. Is it still ongoing? Were people aware [and] turned a blind eye? That’s pretty much the purpose of our investigation,” Comer told reporters on Friday.

The most prominent case involves the Feeding Our Future scheme, which resulted in a $250 million loss when fraudsters received payments from the state for services that were never provided, according to the Department of Justice. However, committee members say the problem extends far beyond this single incident.

Representative Pete Stauber (R-Minn.) described the situation in stark terms, claiming the fraud has reached the “billions” and represents either “incompetence or dereliction of duty” by state officials.

“With the magnitude of the fraud, I find it really almost impossible that the governor or his staff and the attorney general didn’t know,” Stauber said. “And the Minnesota taxpayers are paying for it.”

The investigation has uncovered several troubling examples of program vulnerabilities. Minnesota was forced to shut down its housing assistance program after the FBI uncovered “credible allegations of fraud” involving 77 housing providers in 2025. Similarly, the state’s Medicaid costs for autism-related services have exploded from $6 million to over $190 million since 2018, triggering federal scrutiny.

Chairman Comer revealed that committee investigators have already been in contact with multiple whistleblowers who allege they warned the governor’s office and attorney general about fraud problems “a long time ago,” but their concerns were ignored.

“They’re alleging that they made the governor and the attorney general aware a long time ago, and they did nothing about it. And it’s been an ongoing problem,” Comer said.

The committee plans to send investigators to Minnesota soon, though Comer declined to provide a specific timeline for the investigation or reveal exactly how many whistleblowers have come forward so far, only describing them as “multiple.”

When questioned about the probe, Governor Walz’s office indicated a willingness to cooperate with congressional investigators. “We look forward to working together. While the governor has been working to ensure fraudsters go to prison, the president has been letting them out,” a spokesperson for Walz said.

The investigation comes at a politically sensitive time, with public assistance programs facing increasing scrutiny nationwide. Program integrity experts have long warned that rapid expansion of benefits, particularly during emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic, can create vulnerabilities that sophisticated fraud rings exploit.

For Minnesota, the financial impact could be substantial. Beyond the direct losses from fraud, the state may face additional federal oversight, potential clawbacks of misspent funds, and increased administrative costs to implement stronger safeguards.

The House Oversight Committee’s investigation will likely focus on internal communications, early warning signs that may have been missed, and the adequacy of Minnesota’s fraud detection systems. A key question remains whether officials prioritized rapid distribution of benefits over program integrity, and if political considerations influenced those decisions.

As the investigation unfolds, Minnesota taxpayers and recipients of legitimate assistance will be watching closely to see whether their state government took reasonable precautions to protect public funds intended for vulnerable populations.
