More than 400 employees of the Minnesota Department of Human Services have accused Governor Tim Walz of ignoring widespread fraud warnings and retaliating against staff who attempted to report these issues. The accusations come amid an expanding investigation into what prosecutors describe as one of the nation’s largest COVID-era fraud cases.
A social media account claiming to represent over 480 current DHS staff members stated that Walz is “100% responsible for massive fraud in Minnesota.” The group alleges they attempted to alert the governor about fraudulent activities early on but instead of cooperation, faced systematic retaliation including “monitoring, threats, repression” and efforts to discredit their reports.
“In addition to retaliating against whistleblowers, Tim Walz disempowered the Office of the Legislative Auditor, allowing agencies to disregard their audit findings and guidance,” the group claimed on social media. Governor Walz’s office has not responded to requests for comment on these allegations.
These accusations emerge as federal prosecutors continue to unravel a massive fraud scheme involving the nonprofit Feeding Our Future. The Justice Department recently announced charges against the 78th defendant in the case, which allegedly involved more than $250 million stolen from a federally-funded child nutrition program. The investigation has already resulted in over 50 convictions, with many defendants coming from Minnesota’s Somali community.
What initially appeared to be an isolated incident of pandemic-related fraud has expanded into a broader concern for state and federal officials. The New York Times reported that over the past five years, according to law enforcement authorities, several fraud schemes have proliferated in parts of Minnesota’s Somali community, with some individuals allegedly creating companies that billed state agencies for millions of dollars in social services that were never delivered.
Adding to the controversy, a report from the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal alleged that some stolen funds may have been transferred to Somalia and potentially reached the terrorist group Al-Shabaab. The report cited unnamed federal counterterrorism sources, though none of the federal charges filed to date include any links to terrorism.
Governor Walz addressed the fraud allegations at a press conference last week, stating that such activity “undermines trust in government” and “undermines programs that are absolutely critical in improving quality of life.” He emphasized that perpetrators would face consequences regardless of background, saying, “If you’re committing fraud, no matter where you come from, what you look like, what you believe, you are going to go to jail.”
When pressed about the situation on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Walz responded to questions about his responsibility in failing to prevent the fraud by saying, “Well, certainly, I take responsibility for putting people in jail.” He added, “I will note, it’s not just Somalis. Minnesota is a generous state. Minnesota is a prosperous state, a well-run state. We’re AAA-bond rated. But that attracts criminals. Those people are going to jail. We’re doing everything we can. But to demonize an entire community on the actions of a few, it’s lazy.”
The situation has already drawn national political attention. Former President Donald Trump announced on social media that he would terminate the temporary protected status for Somalis in Minnesota, citing “fraudulent money laundering activity.” Trump’s statement concluded with, “Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER!”
The unfolding scandal represents a significant challenge for Minnesota’s social service system and raises questions about oversight and accountability in government assistance programs, particularly those expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
