In an escalating political confrontation over government fraud investigations, Democratic Representative Dave Min of California has drawn criticism for labeling a recent House Oversight hearing on Minnesota’s fraud scandal as “partisan and racist,” while critics point to significant fraud issues in his own state.

During the contentious hearing earlier this month, Min pushed back against the investigation into Minnesota’s fraud problems, particularly those involving the Somali immigrant community. “We have not seen evidence of any type of fraud on the scale we’re talking about” in California, Min stated during the proceedings.

While acknowledging concerns about Minnesota’s situation, Min questioned the investigation’s motivations, suggesting that the Trump administration was selectively targeting Democrat-led states while ignoring similar issues in Republican-controlled regions.

“It’s hard for me not to look at this hearing in the context in which it’s taking place and not see this as a partisan and racist hearing,” Min said during the session.

The comments prompted a sharp rebuke from House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who accused Democrats of deflection tactics. “Democrats will do anything to deflect from the fraud that has been allowed to run rampant on their watch, including playing the race card,” Emmer said. “First, it’s not racist to call out criminal behavior. Second, I wonder what Congressman Min’s constituents have to say about him not taking fraud seriously when California taxpayers are also being robbed blind to the tune of $72 billion.”

Min’s assertions about California’s relative freedom from major fraud have raised eyebrows given the state’s own documented struggles with government program integrity. Just last month, the California State Auditor’s office released a report identifying several state agencies that had wasted or misused millions of dollars in public funds.

This follows a pattern of audits revealing significant financial mismanagement in California, according to Steve Hilton, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in the state. “It’s totally ridiculous,” Hilton told Fox News Digital regarding Min’s claims. “We’ve already seen state auditor reports that have characterized tens-of-billions-of-dollars as being improperly spent, starting from the audit of state homelessness spending.”

The state auditor has designated seven California agencies as “high-risk” for fraud, waste, and abuse, with an eighth recently added to the watchlist of vulnerable programs. According to Hilton, criminal prosecutions related to homelessness spending by officials are currently underway in the state.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Christian Martinez framed Min’s position as politically motivated rather than principled: “Vulnerable Democrat Dave Min is more outraged by an oversight hearing than the billions in fraud hurting Americans in Minnesota and California. For Min, accountability isn’t a principle, it’s a problem.”

The dispute highlights growing partisan tensions over government accountability measures and the politicization of fraud investigations. Minnesota’s fraud crisis, which has attracted significant federal attention, involves allegations of widespread misappropriation of funds, with a portion of cases implicating members of the Somali immigrant community.

Meanwhile, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has acknowledged the reality of the fraud crisis in his city, stating that “everybody could have done more” to prevent it. The scandal has also prompted calls for increased scrutiny of billions in Biden administration energy grants.

When contacted by Fox News Digital, neither Representative Min nor the White House responded to requests for comment on the controversy.

As federal investigations continue, the political fallout underscores the challenges of addressing government fraud without inflaming partisan and cultural tensions, particularly as both sides accuse the other of either overlooking corruption or weaponizing investigations for political gain.
