First Lady Melania Trump has launched a new initiative focused on enhancing educational and career opportunities for youth in the foster care system, marking an expansion of her existing advocacy work.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday establishing the “Fostering the Future” program, which will coordinate efforts across federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and private sector partners to create pathways to success for foster youth.

“This effort is both empathetic and strategic,” the First Lady said during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House. Speaking before an audience of lawmakers, Cabinet officials, and members of the foster care community, she called on leaders from various sectors to join her initiative, urging them to “rise above the ease of inaction.”

The program will establish an online hub designed to connect foster youth with educational resources and career opportunities. It also aims to increase access to vouchers and grants that can support their educational and professional development.

Several federal agencies will participate in the initiative, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development, as well as the Office of Personnel Management. This multi-agency approach reflects the complex challenges facing foster youth, who often struggle with educational disruptions, housing instability, and limited access to career networks.

“We’re going to have absolutely incredible results,” President Trump said at the signing ceremony, noting that Second Lady Usha Vance has also been actively involved in supporting the initiative.

The “Fostering the Future” program builds upon Melania Trump’s “Be Best” campaign, which was her signature project during her husband’s first term in office. The initiative began in 2021 and has already established scholarship programs for current and former foster youth at several prestigious institutions, including Vanderbilt University, the University of Miami, Villanova University, and Oral Roberts University.

Youth in foster care face significant barriers to educational and career success. According to data from the National Foster Youth Institute, only about 50 percent of foster youth graduate from high school, and fewer than 3 percent earn a college degree. Former foster youth also experience higher rates of unemployment, homelessness, and incarceration compared to their peers.

By focusing on education and career readiness, the initiative aims to address these systemic challenges. Education experts note that targeted support programs can significantly improve outcomes for foster youth when they include comprehensive services such as academic counseling, financial aid, and mentorship.

The private sector involvement could prove particularly valuable, as businesses can offer internships, apprenticeships, and job opportunities that provide foster youth with practical experience and professional connections. Several corporations have already expressed interest in partnering with the initiative, though specific commitments have not yet been announced.

Child welfare advocates have cautiously welcomed the initiative while emphasizing that it should complement broader reforms to the foster care system. They point out that preventative family support services, improved foster parent recruitment and training, and increased funding for child welfare agencies are also essential components of comprehensive reform.

The “Fostering the Future” program represents one of the First Lady’s most significant policy initiatives to date and signals continued attention to the needs of vulnerable youth as the Trump administration begins its second term. Implementation details, including funding allocations and specific program metrics, are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
