Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford Abandons Congressional Bid to Focus on National Debt

Mark Sanford, the former Republican South Carolina governor and congressman, has ended his campaign to reclaim his former House seat just one month after announcing his candidacy. Instead, the 65-year-old politician will launch a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the United States’ growing national debt crisis.

Sanford informed The Associated Press on Thursday that he is shuttering his campaign efforts to focus exclusively on combating the country’s debt and deficit challenges through grassroots activism.

“After a lot of thought, I’ve concluded that the most effective way I can contribute right now is not by seeking office, but by helping build a broader movement focused on the country’s financial future,” Sanford said in a news release. “The trajectory of debt and deficits isn’t a Republican problem or a Democrat problem—it’s an American problem. And it’s one that demands sustained grassroots pressure for change to occur.”

The newly planned organization will operate as a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) entity focused on building a nationwide network to advocate for changing the country’s financial trajectory. According to the Treasury Department, the national debt currently stands at more than $38.9 trillion, including over $31.2 trillion in debt held by the public and more than $7.6 trillion in intragovernmental holdings.

Sanford’s political career has been marked by both significant achievements and personal controversy. He previously served three terms in Congress before being elected governor of South Carolina. However, his gubernatorial tenure became defined by a 2009 scandal in which he disappeared to Argentina to visit a mistress while his staff and family were unaware of his whereabouts. At the time, his office had claimed he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Despite surviving impeachment attempts and resisting calls to resign following the scandal, Sanford’s marriage ended when his then-wife Jenny moved out of the governor’s mansion with their four sons and later filed for divorce.

In a remarkable political comeback, Sanford won back his former congressional seat in a 2013 special election, defeating 15 other candidates. He served two full terms in Congress before losing his 2018 primary to a Republican challenger who had received backing from then-President Donald Trump.

His most recent campaign had begun just last month when he filed on the final day to enter the primary for his former House seat, which is currently held by Republican Representative Nancy Mace.

In explaining his decision to withdraw from the race, Sanford cited both his commitment to addressing the national debt crisis and personal reasons, noting that with his first grandchild on the way, he also realized he wanted to dedicate more time to his family.

“Our nation’s crumbling financial course is what led me to enter this race, and it’s what’s animated my time in politics,” Sanford explained. “I want to make a difference here, and as I began to get back into the world of politics, it really began to hit me how all of Washington’s major changes have come as a result of outside pressure.”

This pivot from seeking elected office to building a grassroots movement reflects Sanford’s long-standing focus on fiscal conservatism throughout his political career. As both governor and congressman, he gained a reputation for emphasizing budget discipline and raising concerns about government spending.

Financial experts have increasingly warned about the sustainability of America’s growing national debt, which has accelerated in recent years due to the pandemic, economic stimulus packages, and ongoing structural deficits. Sanford’s new organization will join various other groups advocating for fiscal responsibility in government spending.
