Manhattan District Attorney Analyst Arrested for Sexual Assault on NYC Subway

A 28-year-old analyst with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office was arrested Tuesday following allegations that he sexually abused a woman while traveling on a subway in Queens, New York City officials confirmed Wednesday.

Tauhid Dewan faces multiple charges after allegedly inappropriately touching a 40-year-old woman’s private area during the evening rush hour on a No. 7 train near the Junction Boulevard station. According to police sources, the victim was a random woman unknown to Dewan prior to the incident.

The New York Police Department reported that Dewan was apprehended around 5 p.m., shortly after the alleged assault occurred. Officers from the NYPD Transit Bureau made the arrest minutes after the incident was reported.

A spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office told media outlets that Dewan has been suspended from his position pending the investigation. City records indicate he has been employed as a senior investigative analyst with the office for nearly four years, having started on July 10, 2022.

Dewan faces a series of charges including forcible touching on a bus or train, third-degree sexual abuse, and second-degree harassment involving physical contact. Additionally, he was charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child under the age of 17, suggesting a minor may have witnessed the alleged assault or was placed at risk by the incident.

Law enforcement sources indicated that Dewan has no prior arrests on record. His arraignment in Queens Criminal Court was scheduled for Wednesday.

This incident comes amid ongoing concerns about safety in New York City’s public transportation system. Transit crime has been a persistent issue for city officials, with the NYPD deploying additional officers throughout the subway system in recent years.

The case is particularly notable given Dewan’s employment with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, led by District Attorney Alvin Bragg. The office has faced scrutiny in recent years for its handling of various criminal cases, and this incident involving one of its own staff members adds another layer of complexity to public perception.

Sexual assaults on public transportation remain a significant concern in major metropolitan areas. According to transit safety advocates, such incidents often go underreported due to victims’ fears or uncertainty about the reporting process. The swift arrest in this case demonstrates the increased vigilance of transit police in responding to such allegations.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has not released additional details about Dewan’s role as a senior investigative analyst or commented further on the allegations. As the case proceeds through the court system, it will likely draw attention to workplace vetting processes and the standards expected of those working within the criminal justice system.

For victims of sexual assault on public transportation, advocates recommend reporting incidents immediately to transit employees or police officers. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority continues to promote its harassment reporting system that allows passengers to document incidents via text message or through the MTA app.
