Former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes launched his campaign for governor on Tuesday, immediately positioning himself as the frontrunner in a crowded Democratic primary field to replace retiring Gov. Tony Evers. The announcement comes less than two years after Barnes narrowly lost to Republican Sen. Ron Johnson by just one percentage point in one of 2022’s most closely watched Senate races.

Barnes enters the gubernatorial contest with high name recognition but also carrying political baggage from his previous campaign, which exposed policy positions that Republicans have already begun using to characterize him as too progressive for Wisconsin voters.

Rep. Tom Tiffany, the most prominent Republican in the race, wasted no time in attacking Barnes, calling him a “far-left extremist” in a statement released Tuesday. “The fact that he is the Democrat frontrunner shows just how radical and out of touch the party has become. Wisconsinites rejected him in 2022, and they will do it again in 2026,” Tiffany said.

Barnes’ political history includes several positions that proved controversial during his Senate run. From 2014 to 2018, he served on the board of directors for Citizen Action of Wisconsin (CAW), a liberal nonprofit that advocates for defunding the police, eliminating law enforcement gang databases, and making Wisconsin a sanctuary state. When CAW endorsed Barnes in June 2022, he expressed pride in their support, saying, “We’ve worked together for a long time now.”

Criminal justice reform has been a central theme throughout Barnes’ political career. Before entering public office, he worked as an organizer for Milwaukee Inner City Congregations Allied for Hope, where he helped launch a 2012 initiative aimed at cutting Wisconsin’s prison population in half. The program, called the 11×15 Campaign, sought to reduce the state’s prison population to 11,000 inmates by 2015.

During his Senate campaign, Barnes also received an endorsement from Color of Change PAC, a self-described “racial justice organization” that has advocated for defunding and disbanding law enforcement, as well as abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

As Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor, Barnes chaired Evers’ Task Force on Climate Change, which delivered a report in December 2020 outlining strategies to combat climate change while promoting “environmental justice.” Upon the report’s release, Barnes emphasized the connection between climate action and equity, stating, “We must ensure those actions are equitable and inclusive—anything less will continue the long pattern of environmental racism we have witnessed in this country.”

Barnes’ newly launched campaign website lists policy priorities including banning assault weapons, codifying abortion rights, and opposing President Trump’s tariff policies. In announcing his candidacy, he stated that “this moment demands bold leadership for Wisconsin.”

When reached for comment, Barnes pushed back against characterizations of his stance on law enforcement. “I’ve had a strong record supporting and delivering resources to give law enforcement the tools and training they need to keep our communities safe and keep violent criminals off our streets, so I obviously disagree with any group calling to defund the police,” he said.

Barnes added a personal dimension to his public safety position: “As someone who lost several close friends to gun violence growing up, I believe deeply and personally that everyone has a right to feel safe in their community, and as Governor I’ll work closely with law enforcement to protect Wisconsinites.”

His campaign emphasized his “strong record supporting law enforcement funding to keep Wisconsin communities safe,” attempting to counter Republican criticism that his positions are too radical for the state.

Wisconsin has become one of the nation’s most pivotal battleground states, with razor-thin margins deciding recent elections. Barnes’ gubernatorial bid represents a significant political comeback attempt after his narrow Senate defeat, and the race is expected to attract substantial national attention and resources as both parties view the governorship as crucial to their 2026 electoral strategies.
