Man accused of planting pipe bombs before Jan. 6 attack on Capitol charged with explosives offense

A man arrested by the FBI in connection with pipe bombs placed in Washington, D.C. before the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot has been charged with explosives offenses, federal authorities announced Monday.

The arrest marks a significant development in what had become one of the most enduring mysteries surrounding the Capitol riot. For more than three years, investigators had been unable to identify the person who placed pipe bombs near the headquarters of both the Republican and Democratic national committees the night before thousands of protesters stormed the Capitol.

The January 6 riot resulted in five deaths and injured approximately 140 police officers as supporters of then-President Donald Trump breached the Capitol building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s electoral victory. More than 1,200 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the riot, with hundreds already convicted and sentenced.

The investigation into the pipe bombs has been particularly challenging for federal authorities. Despite releasing multiple videos and offering a $500,000 reward for information leading to the bomber’s arrest, the case remained unsolved until now.
