NYC Mayor Mamdani Defends Controversial Executive Orders Affecting Jewish Community

Newly sworn-in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani defended his controversial Day 1 executive orders Friday, suggesting that the widely-adopted International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism does not adequately protect Jewish New Yorkers. The self-described democratic socialist faced immediate backlash from Jewish organizations and civil rights groups after rescinding policies established by his predecessor, Eric Adams.

Within hours of taking office, Mamdani issued an executive order revoking “all executive orders issued on or after September 26, 2024,” effectively canceling both the city’s ban on agencies boycotting or divesting from Israel and its adoption of the IHRA’s antisemitism definition.

“Protecting Jewish New Yorkers is going to be a focus of my administration,” Mamdani said during a Friday news conference at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza. “I also know that a number of leading Jewish organizations have immense concerns around this definition.”

When pressed about his plans moving forward, Mamdani offered only that his administration would “deliver on our commitment to protect Jewish New Yorkers in a manner that is able to actually fulfill that,” before pivoting to other topics.

The mayor defended the timing of his actions, framing them as part of a broader reset following the Adams administration. “As the new mayor of a city, you have to sign a continuation of all prior executive orders, or a revocation or an amendment of all of them,” Mamdani explained. He characterized his decision as establishing a clean slate after “a moment when many New Yorkers lost even more faith in New York City politics” following Adams’ indictment.

The Anti-Defamation League’s New York and New Jersey chapter, along with other Jewish community organizations, issued a joint statement expressing deep concern about the mayor’s actions. “Revoking these executive orders removes key tools for addressing antisemitism, including BDS-driven efforts that seek to demonize, delegitimize, and isolate the world’s only Jewish state,” the ADL stated.

Critics point to the mayor’s history of activism regarding Israel as context for his decisions. Mamdani, who made history as the first mayor sworn in on a Quran during his New York City inauguration, has been scrutinized for what some characterize as a record of hostility toward Israel.

The controversy surrounding Mamdani’s executive orders highlights the tensions that have emerged in progressive politics around issues of Israel, Palestine, and antisemitism. The IHRA definition, which has been adopted by numerous governments and organizations worldwide, includes examples that some critics argue limit legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies.

Beyond the orders affecting Jewish concerns, Mamdani also established five new deputy mayor positions and created an “Office of Mass Engagement” aimed at centralizing the city government’s public comment mechanisms to increase civic participation.

The backlash presents an early challenge for Mamdani’s administration as he attempts to balance his progressive agenda with the needs of New York City’s diverse communities, particularly amid heightened sensitivity around antisemitism nationwide.

As the debate continues, many New Yorkers are watching closely to see what specific policies the new mayor will implement to fulfill his stated commitment to protecting Jewish residents while pursuing his broader vision for the city.
