Maine State Representative Laurel Libby to Form Conservative Coalition Supporting Susan Collins

Maine State Representative Laurel Libby announced Monday she will not seek re-election in 2026, instead focusing on launching a network of conservative organizations aimed at supporting Republican Senator Susan Collins and other GOP candidates across the state.

The Republican lawmaker is partnering with The Sentinel Action Fund, a conservative super PAC, to create the Lead Maine Committee. This initiative will mobilize grassroots voters and invest more than $4 million to support Collins’ re-election campaign against Democratic Governor Janet Mills, who announced her challenge for the Senate seat last month.

“From Fort Kent to Wells, there’s no doubt that Maine is a uniquely beautiful state — but its true strength is its people who are hardworking, independent, and full of grit,” Libby told Fox News Digital. “Everywhere I go, Mainers tell me they’re frustrated with the challenges our state faces but uncertain how to make a difference.”

The organizational network will include a 501(c)4 nonprofit and a state PAC, each focused on different aspects of the political process. According to Libby, the goal is to build “a long-term, durable campaign infrastructure that grows our conservative grassroots movement” while empowering Maine residents to become more politically engaged.

Jessica Anderson, President of the Sentinel Action Fund, emphasized the importance of the partnership as Republicans look toward the 2026 midterm elections. “With the midterm elections only 350 days away, we’re hitting the ground running in Maine,” Anderson said. She called the Maine Senate race “pivotal” to securing and potentially expanding the Republican Senate majority.

This endorsement marks the Sentinel Action Fund’s first for the 2026 election cycle. In 2024, the group supported successful Republican Senate candidates Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, Tim Sheehy in Montana, and Bernie Moreno in Ohio.

Libby has been a controversial figure in Maine politics. Earlier this year, she was censured by the Maine House of Representatives after identifying a transgender high school athlete by name and photos in a social media post on her government account. She subsequently filed a lawsuit against House leadership, arguing the censure violated her First Amendment rights.

The U.S. Supreme Court eventually ordered the restoration of her voting privileges while her lawsuit proceeded through appeals. The Maine House fully restored her speaking and voting rights for the remainder of the legislative session in June.

A vocal critic of policies allowing transgender athletes in girls’ sports, Libby framed her new venture as a response to what she describes as increasingly radical Democratic policies in Maine. “I understand firsthand just how radical Maine Democrats have become,” she said. “Protecting this Senate seat and ensuring Senator Collins can continue her work in Washington is important to every freedom-loving Mainer.”

The investment in Collins’ re-election campaign comes as Republicans aim to protect and expand their Senate majority. Collins, who has represented Maine in the Senate since 1997, will face a significant challenge from Governor Mills, who has served as the state’s chief executive since 2019.

“Maine needs a long-term, durable campaign infrastructure that grows our conservative grassroots movement and sets Republicans up for success in 2026 and beyond,” Libby explained. “Lead Maine and its affiliated organizations are committed to building exactly that by educating and mobilizing citizens to drive meaningful societal and electoral change at both the state and national levels.”

Political analysts view the Maine Senate race as potentially crucial for control of the upper chamber, particularly as Republicans seek to expand their narrow majority following the 2024 elections. The race is expected to attract national attention and significant outside spending from both parties.
