Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores, appeared in a New York City courtroom with visible injuries, including bandages on her face and complaints of rib pain, according to her attorney.

Mark Donnelly, Flores’ lawyer, informed the court that she suffered “significant injuries” during the U.S. raid on the couple’s Caracas compound last Saturday. Donnelly requested a full X-ray to determine if she had sustained fractured ribs in the incident. Flores was visibly wearing two bandages, one on her forehead and another above her eye, during the proceedings.

Both Maduro and Flores pleaded not guilty to serious charges in their first court appearance on Monday. The Venezuelan president faces four charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, and weapons-related counts involving machine guns and destructive devices. Flores faces three charges, including cocaine importation conspiracy and the same weapons charges as her husband.

The couple’s arraignment comes amid significant international attention following their capture and extradition to the United States. The raid on their compound in Venezuela’s capital represents an unprecedented operation against a sitting foreign head of state, sending shockwaves through diplomatic circles and raising questions about sovereignty and international law.

Donnelly, who recently filed a motion to serve as counsel for Flores, brings substantial legal experience to the case. He previously served twelve years at the Department of Justice, including as Senior Advisor to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Texas. His biography notes extensive experience investigating white-collar cases, having led the Southern District’s fraud division for over two years. His practice areas included FCPA investigations, healthcare fraud, SEC matters, investor fraud, and cybersecurity cases.

The attorney also has recent high-profile experience, having been enlisted by the Texas House of Representatives to assist in the 2023 investigation and impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Though Paxton’s case reached the Texas Senate, he was ultimately acquitted of all charges.

Maduro and Flores’ relationship has deep political roots. The couple, married for 12 years, first met while working closely with Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez. At the time, Maduro reportedly described Flores as having a “fiery character,” according to Reuters. Despite meeting decades ago, they didn’t marry until after Maduro was elected president in 2013.

The case has prompted international reactions beyond the courtroom. Switzerland has imposed a four-year asset freeze linked to Maduro and his associates following his capture, indicating the global financial implications of the case. The freezing of assets suggests authorities are concerned about potential attempts to move or hide wealth during the legal proceedings.

During his first U.S. court appearance, Maduro reportedly took a defiant stance, declaring himself a “prisoner of war” – language that signals he may attempt to challenge the legitimacy of the proceedings on international law grounds.

The prosecution of both Maduro and Flores represents a significant escalation in U.S. efforts to combat narco-terrorism and international drug trafficking. The indictment alleges their involvement in cocaine trafficking networks that have impacted the United States for years.

The case continues to raise questions about Venezuela’s political future. With the country’s president now in U.S. custody facing serious criminal charges, Venezuela faces an uncertain transition period. Opposition figures and international observers are closely watching how power dynamics evolve in Caracas during Maduro’s absence.

As the legal proceedings move forward, both the geopolitical implications and the specific details of the charges against the couple will continue to draw international scrutiny.
