US Military Captures Venezuelan Leader Maduro in Large-Scale Strike

The indictment accuses Maduro and his co-conspirators — including Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello and former Interior Minister Ramón Rodríguez Chacín — of partnering with narco-terrorists since at least 1999 to distribute cocaine throughout the Western Hemisphere, including into the United States.
“In sum, MADURO MOROS and his co-conspirators have, for decades, partnered with some of the most violent and prolific drug traffickers and narco-terrorists in the world, and relied on corrupt officials throughout the region, to distribute tons of cocaine to the United States,” the indictment states.
The document details coordination between the defendants and various criminal organizations, including Mexico’s Zetas and Sinaloa Cartel, Colombian group ELN, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army, and Tren de Aragua.
“TdA has expanded its criminal network throughout the Western Hemisphere and established a presence in the United States, including New York,” the indictment continues. “TdA’s criminal activities include human smuggling and other illicit acts.”
President Trump has consistently targeted Maduro’s alleged connections to drug cartels, highlighting how these foreign criminal organizations have infiltrated the United States and contributed to the nation’s opioid crisis. In March 2025, Trump designated Tren de Aragua a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
During Saturday’s press conference, Trump delivered a stark warning: “All political and military figures in Venezuela should understand what happened to Maduro can happen to them.”
This action represents an expansion of charges first brought against Maduro and 14 other Venezuelan officials in 2020. The January 2025 indictment adds Maduro’s son and wife as defendants.
The Venezuelan government swiftly condemned the U.S. action as “very serious military aggression” against its sovereignty, claiming the strike impacted “the civilian and military localities of the city of Caracas, capital of the Republic, and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira.”
“The objective of this attack is none other than to seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals, attempting to break the Nation’s political independence by force,” the Venezuelan government stated. “They will not succeed. After more than two hundred years of independence, the people and their legitimate Government remain steadfast in defense of sovereignty.”
According to Trump, Maduro and his wife were flown by helicopter to the USS Iwo Jima, a U.S. military ship, and will be transported to New York City to stand trial.
During his press conference, Trump announced that the U.S. would “run” Venezuela until a safe transition of power could be implemented. “We don’t want to be involved with having somebody else get in and have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years,” he explained.
The operation against Maduro follows dozens of U.S. military strikes on suspected narco-boats since September, which Trump claims have “knocked out 97% of the drugs coming in by sea.”
International reaction has been swift and critical. China’s Foreign Ministry reported being “deeply shocked and strongly condemns the use of force by the U.S. against a sovereign country.” Russia, a crucial Venezuelan ally, called the strike “an act of armed aggression” and condemned it as “deeply concerning.”
Attorney General Bondi warned on social media that Maduro and his wife “will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts.”
