Commerce Secretary Lutnick Faces Congressional Inquiry Over Epstein Ties
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appeared Wednesday before a House committee investigating his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as lawmakers seek clarity on their relationship that continued after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from an underage girl.
The closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee marks the latest chapter in the ongoing scrutiny of powerful political figures who maintained contact with Epstein despite his criminal history. Lutnick, a key member of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, has previously given inconsistent accounts of his interactions with Epstein.
“I did not have any relationship with him. I barely had anything to do with him,” Lutnick told senators during a February hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee. However, this statement came after he claimed on a podcast last year that he had decided to “never be in the room” with Epstein following a disturbing tour of Epstein’s home in 2005.
Documents and testimony have since revealed a more substantial connection. Records show Lutnick actually had an hour-long meeting at Epstein’s home in 2011, and his family visited Epstein’s notorious private island in 2012 for lunch. Federal case files released on Epstein also documented ongoing email communication between the two men.
In 2018, Lutnick contacted Epstein about a proposed museum expansion in their neighborhood that would have blocked views from their homes. The records also show Epstein contributed $50,000 to a 2017 dinner honoring Lutnick, while Lutnick invited Epstein to a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in 2015. The two men also invested in the same business venture in 2013.
Despite mounting pressure from lawmakers, the White House has continued to express support for Lutnick, who has been one of the most vocal advocates for Trump’s sweeping tariffs strategy. Lutnick has maintained close ties with Trump for years and has been an active fundraiser for both his 2020 and 2024 presidential campaigns.
The investigation comes at a challenging time for the administration, which has tried unsuccessfully for over a year to distance itself from connections to Epstein. Lutnick is the highest-ranking official in the Trump administration, besides the president himself, to be named in case files related to Epstein.
Several Democratic lawmakers have called for Lutnick’s resignation over the revelations, while some Republicans, including Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina, have insisted he should at least testify before the Oversight Committee.
The Commerce Secretary has welcomed the interview with lawmakers, maintaining he has done nothing wrong. However, his changing narrative about the extent of his relationship with Epstein has raised questions about transparency. Lutnick, who previously led brokerage and investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald, has significant influence in both financial and political circles.
The committee’s investigation represents a broader examination of how powerful men continued associating with Epstein even after his criminal behavior became public knowledge. Trump has consistently denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and has stated he ended their relationship years before Epstein’s legal troubles.
The committee is also scheduled to hear testimony on May 29 from Pam Bondi, who was recently removed from her position as attorney general.
Epstein died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His death, ruled a suicide, came after he had avoided significant prison time through a controversial plea deal in Florida years earlier, despite substantial evidence of crimes involving minors.
The ongoing congressional investigation seeks to uncover the full extent of Epstein’s network of powerful connections and how those relationships may have enabled his criminal behavior or helped shield him from consequences for years.
