Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer to End Four-Decade Congressional Career

Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland is expected to announce his retirement from Congress as soon as Thursday, bringing to a close a distinguished political career spanning more than four decades in the House of Representatives. The 86-year-old congressman reportedly made his decision during the holiday season and has scheduled a 10 a.m. ET floor speech on Thursday.

Hoyer, first elected to Congress in 1981, represents a district that extends from Washington D.C.’s eastern suburbs into southern Maryland. Throughout his tenure, he established himself as a pivotal figure in Democratic leadership, most notably serving as House Majority Leader, the second-highest position in the chamber’s hierarchy, under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
