Nationwide Protests Erupt Against ICE Following Minneapolis Shooting

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets across major U.S. cities this weekend, rallying against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in demonstrations that at times escalated into confrontations with police.

The protests, organized by the ICE Out for Good coalition, were part of a “weekend of action” featuring more than 1,000 events nationwide. Leading the coalition is Indivisible, the left-wing advocacy group previously known for organizing “No Kings” protests against President Donald Trump in 2025.

At the heart of the demonstrations is the death of Renee Nicole Good, who was killed during a confrontation with ICE agents in Minneapolis last week. Federal authorities maintain that Good attempted to run over an officer during the incident, leading to the fatal shooting.

“Renee Nicole Good was a wife, a mother of three, and a member of her community,” said Indivisible co-executive director Leah Greenberg in a statement. “She, and the dozens of other sons, daughters, friends, siblings, parents, and community members who have been killed by ICE, should be alive today.”

The weekend protests resulted in multiple arrests across several cities. In Austin, police detained at least three demonstrators as tensions escalated. Los Angeles saw similar confrontations outside an ICE detention facility, where police issued dispersal orders that some protesters refused to obey, leading to several arrests shortly before 7 p.m. local time.

“This weekend, people across the country are coming together to grieve, honor those we’ve lost, and demand accountability from a system that has operated with impunity for far too long,” Greenberg added. “ICE’s violence is not a statistic, it has names, families, and futures attached to it, and we refuse to look away or stay silent.”

The protests come amid intensified immigration enforcement operations under the Trump administration. While demonstrators criticize what they characterize as excessive force and lack of accountability within ICE, administration officials maintain that operations specifically target immigrants with criminal records.

Vice President JD Vance defended the operations on social media, highlighting a list of individuals arrested in Minnesota that reportedly includes convicted child rapists and murderers. “Arresting and deporting these people is absolutely critical to national security,” Vance wrote on X. “National democrats are going to get our law enforcement killed if they don’t stop lying about this issue and the people working to keep us safe.”

The tensions reflect the broader national divide over immigration policy under President Trump’s second term. His administration has prioritized increased deportations and stricter enforcement as cornerstones of its border security strategy, fulfilling campaign promises that energized his base but have drawn fierce opposition from immigrant rights advocates.

Minneapolis has become a particular flashpoint after Mayor Jacob Frey demanded that state authorities be included in the investigation of Good’s shooting. This request highlights the growing friction between some local governments and federal immigration authorities, with sanctuary cities and states often resisting cooperation with ICE operations.

The weekend demonstrations mark one of the largest coordinated anti-ICE actions since Trump’s return to office, indicating that immigration enforcement will likely remain a contentious issue throughout his presidency. Advocacy groups have vowed to continue organizing protests, suggesting that this weekend’s events may signal the beginning of a sustained resistance movement against the administration’s immigration policies.

As federal operations continue, law enforcement agencies across the country are preparing for potential further demonstrations, particularly in cities with significant immigrant populations or where ICE operations have been especially active.
