Congressional Probe Launched into Deaths and Disappearances of Nuclear and Aerospace Scientists

House Republicans have initiated a formal inquiry into reports that at least 10 individuals connected to sensitive U.S. nuclear and aerospace programs have died or disappeared in recent years. The investigation, led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Subcommittee Chairman Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), seeks to determine whether these cases present a broader national security threat.

In letters sent Monday to the FBI, Department of Energy, NASA, and Department of War, the lawmakers requested briefings on what they describe as “unconfirmed public reporting” involving individuals linked to “U.S. nuclear secrets or rocket technology” who have “died or mysteriously vanished.”

“If the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets,” Comer and Burlison wrote in their communications to the agencies.

The White House has acknowledged awareness of the concerns but has not confirmed any connections between the cases. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that officials are coordinating with relevant agencies to gather more information. President Donald Trump told reporters he had “just left a meeting” on the matter, describing it as “pretty serious stuff” and suggesting that answers might be forthcoming soon.

The War Department has previously responded to inquiries by stating there are “no active national security investigations” involving any current or former personnel tied to the reported cases.

Among the high-profile cases mentioned is retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William “Neil” McCasland, who disappeared from his Albuquerque, New Mexico home in February. Authorities noted that while McCasland left behind personal items, he took his wallet and a firearm. Despite ongoing search efforts, he remains missing.

Another concerning case involves Monica Reza, a NASA materials engineer who served as director of the Materials Processing Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Reza disappeared during a hike in California in June 2025 and has not been found.

The congressional letters also reference former NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist Michael David Hicks, who died in 2023 under circumstances that have drawn attention from investigators.

These cases represent a spectrum of circumstances, including unexplained disappearances, confirmed homicides, and deaths where authorities have not identified foul play. Law enforcement agencies have not officially linked these incidents, despite speculation in media reports and among some analysts.

Of particular interest to the congressional investigators are reports suggesting potential professional connections between some of the individuals through Air Force-funded research programs involving advanced materials for space and weapons systems. While such connections remain unconfirmed, they have fueled concerns about potential targeting of individuals with access to sensitive technological information.

The inquiry spans four key agencies responsible for various aspects of national security, including nuclear weapons infrastructure, advanced military research, federal law enforcement, and space exploration. This broad approach indicates the seriousness with which lawmakers are treating the possibility of a coordinated threat against U.S. scientific personnel.

Comer and Burlison have requested staff-level briefings from all contacted agencies by April 27. They are seeking information about the affected individuals and details on existing procedures designed to protect scientific personnel with access to classified research.

The investigation comes amid heightened concerns about foreign intelligence activities targeting U.S. technological advantages in space, nuclear, and defense sectors. While no evidence has yet established a definitive pattern or foreign involvement in these cases, the timing and professional backgrounds of those affected have raised red flags among security analysts.

As the investigation proceeds, it will likely focus on whether these incidents represent isolated tragedies or point to a more coordinated effort to compromise U.S. scientific expertise in critical defense and aerospace domains.
