In the wake of Saturday night’s shooting at the Washington Hilton hotel during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz of Florida is calling on political leaders from both parties to “bring the temperature down” amid escalating political rhetoric.

The incident occurred when 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, allegedly stormed the hotel lobby armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives. Secret Service agents quickly apprehended Allen as hundreds of journalists and Cabinet officials were evacuated from the venue.

“It’s an opportunity, in my opinion, for everyone to bring the temperature down,” Moskowitz told Fox News Digital. “If we do the finger pointing, then the temperature’s never going to come down…We’re like high schoolers.”

Allen appeared in federal court Monday facing serious charges, including attempting to assassinate the president of the United States, transporting a firearm across state lines, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. According to authorities, Allen had sent a written manifesto to family members outlining his intentions to target President Trump and other Cabinet officials prior to the incident.

This marks what would be the third assassination attempt targeting former President Trump since 2024, following incidents where he was shot in the ear at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and later targeted at his Florida golf course.

The shooting has intensified partisan divisions regarding political rhetoric. Republican Representative Lauren Boebert of Colorado claimed, “The manifesto doesn’t sound much different than all of the talking heads on every liberal news station,” adding that “psycho-frickin’ leftists” were responsible for the violence.

“It is disgusting, and it needs to end, period,” Boebert stated, connecting the incident to the September assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. She supported Trump’s controversial plan for a White House ballroom addition as a “national security issue.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed similar sentiments during a Monday news conference, blaming a “left-wing cult of hatred” for the violence. She specifically criticized ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for commenting that the first lady had the “glow of an expectant widow.”

“Who in their right mind says a wife would be glowing over the potential murder of her beloved husband?” Leavitt questioned. “And having experienced what I did with the first lady on Saturday night, I can tell you she was anything but that.”

Moskowitz acknowledged that responsibility for heated rhetoric exists on both sides of the political spectrum. “The rhetoric on both sides, for a while now, has been elevated, and listen, the president has had a part of that,” he said. “He’s had responsibility in the rhetoric, and he should own that. His tweets exist. There’s a reality of that.”

The Florida congressman also distanced himself from far-left streamer Hasan Piker, who has faced scrutiny for his political commentary. “I do reject people on my side, or trying to be on my side, like Hasan Piker, who’s advocating for senators to be killed and saying things like, ‘we deserve 9/11.’ He’s not a Democrat. He doesn’t belong in the Democratic Party,” Moskowitz stated.

According to Moskowitz, the American public recognizes that neither political side is blameless in the current climate. “The American people don’t believe that and it’s why our poll numbers for both sides are in the tubes,” he said.

The incident comes during a period of heightened political tensions in America, with security concerns mounting for political figures across the spectrum. The shooting at the Washington Hilton—a venue that has hosted the high-profile Correspondents’ Dinner for decades—underscores the continuing security challenges facing public officials.

Federal investigators continue to examine the suspect’s background and potential connections to determine a motive for the attack, which occurred at one of Washington’s most prominent annual media events.
