In a powerful display of interfaith solidarity, House Speaker Mike Johnson welcomed Ahmed Al-Ahmed to the Capitol on Thursday, honoring the Syrian-born Australian Muslim who heroically disarmed one of the attackers during the deadly Hanukkah shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach last month.

“Ahmed is the brave hero who stopped the vicious antisemitic terrorist attacker in Australia on the first night of Hanukkah. He is still recovering from his wounds,” Johnson wrote on social media platform X, sharing a photograph of their meeting. “Antisemitism must be confronted and defeated wherever it appears, and we continue to pray for those who grieve the loss of their loved ones because of the horrific attack at Bondi Beach.”

The Capitol meeting included Rabbi Levi Shemtov, a prominent Chabad-Lubavitch leader in Washington, D.C., and Rabbi Yehoram Ulman of Sydney, a senior religious figure who lost his son-in-law, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, in the December 14 attack that claimed at least 15 lives.

According to a Chabad spokesperson, Rabbi Ulman personally invited Al-Ahmed to accompany him to the United States to promote shared community values and commemorate the heroes of that tragic day, many of whom did not survive their confrontations with the gunmen.

During their U.S. visit, Ulman and Al-Ahmed made a significant pilgrimage to the Ohel Chabad Lubavitch in Queens, New York, the burial site of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the late leader of the Chabad movement. This sacred site has been visited by numerous political leaders over the years, including former President Donald Trump.

Rabbi Ulman has emerged as a prominent voice for Australia’s Jewish community in the aftermath of the tragedy, having presided over many of the funerals for the victims from his congregation. Chabad, a global Jewish organization with emissaries worldwide dedicated to strengthening Jewish identity and practice, was hosting the Hanukkah celebration that turned deadly when gunmen opened fire on the crowd gathered to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

Al-Ahmed’s courageous actions during the attack were captured on video that quickly spread across the globe. As chaos erupted, he confronted one of the gunmen and was shot during the struggle. Nearly a month later, Al-Ahmed continues to wear a sling due to his injuries.

His selfless bravery struck a chord with people worldwide, transcending religious and cultural boundaries. A GoFundMe campaign established in his honor has raised more than $2.6 million from nearly 45,000 donors, demonstrating the profound impact of his actions.

“In a moment of chaos and danger, Ahmed al-Ahmed stepped forward without hesitation,” the fundraiser states. “His actions were selfless, instinctive, and undeniably heroic, taken without regard for his own safety. Early reports indicate he was shot twice in the process while protecting others.”

The recognition of Al-Ahmed’s heroism has extended beyond political circles and social media. During his U.S. visit, he was honored at the annual Colel Chabad gala, where he received a meaningful award—a Hanukkah menorah in a glass case bearing the inscription “Light Will Win.” The award was presented by billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, with Rabbi Ulman introducing Al-Ahmed and praising his heroic actions.

The meeting between Johnson and Al-Ahmed represents a significant moment of unity amid rising global antisemitism and religious tensions. It highlights how individual courage can transcend religious differences and inspire broader solidarity against hate and violence.

As communities worldwide continue to grapple with religious extremism and targeted violence, Al-Ahmed’s actions and the subsequent interfaith response offer a powerful counternarrative—one that emphasizes shared humanity and the universal values of courage, compassion, and standing against hatred in all its forms.
