In a heated standoff over Department of Homeland Security funding, House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday accused Congressional Democrats of holding government operations “hostage” to advance what he called a “radical agenda” on immigration policy.

The ongoing partial government shutdown, which has particularly affected air travel across the country, has intensified as Republicans and Democrats remain at an impasse over funding for immigration enforcement agencies.

“They have taken hostage the funding processes of government so that they can impose their radical agenda on the American people,” Johnson told reporters, referring to Senate Democrats. He added that Republicans are united in their position to fully fund DHS to end the shutdown.

Following a two-hour conference call with House Republicans, Johnson firmly stated that his party would not support any measures that might “reopen the borders” or “stop the deportation of dangerous criminal illegal aliens.”

The political battle has left travelers facing extensive wait times at major airports including Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. TSA staffing shortages have worsened as unpaid agents resign, creating mounting pressure on lawmakers to reach a resolution.

On Friday, the Senate advanced legislation to fund most of DHS, with notable exceptions for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Border Patrol. This compromise approach has failed to gain traction among House Republicans.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries countered Johnson’s claims, stating, “The only thing standing between ending this chaos or not are House Republicans. There’s a bipartisan bill that emerged from the Senate with uniform support, and it should be brought to the floor immediately.”

The current shutdown began in February following two controversial incidents where federal agents fatally shot individuals during immigration raids in Minnesota. These events prompted Democrats to demand significant changes to ICE and DHS operations before agreeing to fund the agencies.

Johnson dismissed the Senate’s overnight efforts to advance partial funding as “a joke” and “unconscionable,” criticizing Democrats for attempting to pass legislation in the early morning hours before departing for a holiday recess.

As a temporary solution, President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to pay TSA agents despite Congress not having appropriated the funds. This unusual move highlights the severity of the situation as essential security personnel continue working without regular paychecks.

Johnson indicated that House Republicans plan to introduce a continuing resolution that would maintain current funding levels for all DHS agencies. “The reason that we can’t accept this ridiculousness is because we’re not going to risk not funding the agencies that keep the American people safe,” he explained.

The standoff reflects deeper divisions on immigration policy that have intensified during an election year. Republicans have consistently pushed for stronger border security and enforcement measures, while Democrats have sought reforms to immigration enforcement practices following the controversial Minnesota incidents.

With no immediate resolution in sight, millions of travelers continue facing disruptions, and thousands of federal employees remain in limbo as the shutdown enters its next phase. The impasse represents one of the most consequential funding disputes in recent years, with significant implications for both national security operations and the broader political landscape.
