Pakistani Man Convicted in Plot to Assassinate Trump Claims Iranian Involvement

A 47-year-old Pakistani national, Asif Merchant, was convicted Friday of plotting to assassinate President Donald Trump and other high-profile U.S. politicians in what prosecutors described as a murder-for-hire scheme directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

During testimony at his trial, Merchant told FBI agent Jacqueline Smith that he believed Iran “was responsible” for the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. According to Smith, Merchant stated that the Butler shooting “was the same thing he was sent here to do.”

Merchant was arrested on July 12, just one day before the Butler rally where Thomas Crooks fired multiple shots into the crowd, killing one person and grazing Trump’s ear. The FBI has consistently maintained that its investigation found no evidence linking Crooks to co-conspirators or foreign actors.

The jury convicted Merchant on charges of murder-for-hire and attempt to commit terrorism after a trial that featured damning evidence, including video recordings of Merchant outlining an assassination plot on a napkin while meeting with an FBI informant. Prosecutors also presented evidence that Merchant attempted to hire two hit men for $5,000, who were actually federal agents working undercover.

During his testimony, Merchant claimed his targets extended beyond Trump to include then-President Joe Biden and former presidential candidate Nikki Haley. He told jurors he participated in the plot only because the IRGC had threatened his family if he refused to cooperate.

“I had no other options,” Merchant testified. “My family was threatened.”

However, FBI agent Smith contradicted this claim, testifying that Merchant never mentioned fears for his family during their conversations. Instead, Smith said Merchant expressed interest in conducting intelligence work for payment.

Smith further testified that an Iranian handler had instructed Merchant to attend a Republican rally to assess security measures, but Merchant was concerned about being recognized and instead watched the rally online.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, particularly regarding alleged Iranian plots targeting U.S. officials on American soil. Security experts note this case represents one of the most direct attempts by a foreign adversary to eliminate a high-profile U.S. political figure in recent years.

Merchant’s defense team portrayed their client as a family man deeply committed to his faith who they claimed intentionally performed his tasks incompetently to ensure he would be caught. Defense lawyers argued that Merchant believed his family would be harmed if he did not appear to cooperate with the Iranian operatives.

The conviction carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Merchant’s sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.

The case comes amid heightened scrutiny of Iranian operations on U.S. soil, with intelligence officials warning that Tehran has become increasingly aggressive in targeting dissidents and political figures abroad. The Justice Department has pursued several cases involving alleged Iranian plots against U.S. citizens and officials in recent years.

Security analysts suggest the conviction sends a strong message about U.S. capabilities to detect and disrupt foreign-directed assassination plots, while also raising concerns about the potential for similar operations in the future.

The FBI’s counterterrorism units continue to monitor potential threats from foreign actors, particularly as political tensions remain high following the 2024 election cycle and recent military actions in the Middle East.
