Illinois Governor Raises Alarm Over Trump’s Potential Response to Epstein Documents
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has expressed serious concerns about how President Donald Trump might respond to newly released documents linking him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, suggesting the president could resort to extreme measures to divert public attention.
“My great fear, of course, is that with the release of that information, which I think will be devastating for Trump, he’s going to do everything in his power to distract,” Pritzker told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday. “What does that mean? I mean, he might take us to war with Venezuela just to get a distraction in the news and take it out of the headlines.”
The documents in question have reignited scrutiny of Trump’s relationship with Epstein. In a 2019 email to a journalist, Epstein wrote that Trump “knew about the girls,” though the exact nature of what Trump allegedly knew remains unclear. The White House has responded by accusing Democrats of selectively leaking the emails to damage the president politically.
Pritzker, who is widely viewed as a potential Democratic presidential contender for 2028, has positioned himself as one of Trump’s most vocal critics among Democratic governors. During the interview, he described the president as “a narcissist” and suggested that Trump “has dementia.”
The Illinois governor also criticized members of his own party, particularly regarding the recent government shutdown resolution. He characterized the decision by seven Democratic senators and one independent to side with Republicans as an “enormous mistake” that benefited Trump politically.
“I’ve been on team fight from the very beginning,” Pritzker asserted. “And I don’t appreciate when we’ve got Democrats who are caving in and doing basically what the Trump administration wants.”
While Pritzker expressed disappointment in Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s handling of the situation, he stopped short of joining calls for Schumer’s resignation. Instead, he directed stronger criticism toward the Democratic senators who voted for the deal, including his own state’s senior senator, Dick Durbin.
“We were winning,” Pritzker said, pointing to recent Democratic electoral successes across the country. “I do not understand why people caved when we were on the verge of getting real change.”
Pritzker’s concerns about Trump’s potential for distraction tactics stem partly from firsthand experience with federal interventions in his state. Chicago and its suburbs have been the target of “Operation Midway Blitz,” a major immigration enforcement action that has resulted in over 3,300 arrests since September. These operations have sometimes involved helicopters, tear gas, and nighttime raids.
“This is part of the militarization of our American cities that Donald Trump is engaging in,” Pritzker said. “And it’s dangerous. It shouldn’t happen, but he’s got a purpose behind it. And it’s to affect our elections in 2026.”
The governor warned that similar immigration crackdowns could soon expand to other states, revealing he had recently spoken with North Carolina Governor Josh Stein after reports emerged that federal forces might be deployed to Charlotte.
“I’m hoping that the pushback will finally lead them to ratchet down their efforts,” Pritzker said.
As one of the nation’s most prominent Democratic governors, Pritzker’s comments reflect growing concern among party leaders about both Trump’s governance style and internal Democratic party unity as they navigate challenging political terrain ahead of upcoming election cycles.
