Rep. Omar’s Daughter Continues Activism Amid Questions Over Family’s Wealth

While Representative Ilhan Omar continues to battle accusations about her financial status, her daughter Isra Hirsi has maintained a high-profile role as a political activist championing left-wing causes since her pre-teen years.

Hirsi, now in her early twenties, has described herself as “an angry Black girl” and established a reputation as a committed political organizer. Her activism began early – at just 12 years old, she joined her mother at a Black Lives Matter demonstration that forced the Mall of America to shut down, an event that ultimately required intervention from 50 riot control officers and over 200 police personnel.

By age 15, Hirsi had co-founded the U.S. Youth Climate Strike, a branch of Greta Thunberg’s “Fridays for Future” movement. Her environmental advocacy earned her a Brower Youth Award in 2019, with Rep. Omar later proudly noting that her daughter had organized “a statewide school walk out on the 20th anniversary of Columbine” and led “the biggest youth climate rally at our nation’s Capitol” while still a teenager.

The mother-daughter dynamic has drawn attention amid ongoing questions about Rep. Omar’s financial status. In February, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer raised concerns about financial disclosures showing the value of two companies linked to Omar’s husband had surged from tens of thousands of dollars to as much as $30 million. Omar later filed an amended disclosure showing assets worth between $18,004 and $95,000, claiming an accounting error – a revision that drew skepticism from critics like Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

These financial questions stand in contrast to Hirsi’s continued activism against capitalism and her participation in leftist causes. Most notably, Hirsi was suspended from Barnard College in 2024 after participating in anti-Israel protests on Columbia University’s campus. The prestigious women’s college, where annual costs approach $100,000, later readmitted her, allowing her to continue her education.

As an organizer with CU Apartheid Divest and Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine, Hirsi was among more than 100 protesters arrested by NYPD in April 2024 for trespassing during campus encampments. Rep. Omar publicly praised her daughter’s “courage and compassion” following the arrest.

More recently, Hirsi traveled to Cuba on a trip sponsored by CodePink, an organization with connections to Neville Roy Singham, an American tech entrepreneur based in Shanghai who reportedly supports Chinese Communist Party policies. According to a Fox News Digital investigation, Singham has channeled approximately $278 million into various activist groups, including the People’s Forum, which Hirsi credited in an Instagram post about her Cuba trip.

During the visit, which occurred while many Cuban citizens were experiencing an electricity blackout, Hirsi and other activists stayed in a five-star hotel while protesting economic sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. “People are here from across the globe to express solidarity with the Cuban people,” she wrote on social media. “People who are standing against the oppressive blockade exacerbated by the [T]rump administration.”

Fifteen months after her arrest at Columbia, the New York Post reported that Hirsi had posted on Instagram that she was unemployed and selling used clothes to make money, while continuing to share anti-Israel content across her social media platforms.

Rep. Omar has consistently supported her daughter’s activism, frequently interacting with and praising her on social media. Following the Cuba trip, Omar posted: “I am incredibly proud of Isra and everyone who made the trip to Cuba. They took tons of aid to make sure the people of Cuba knew that there are so many people across the world who stand in solidarity with them.”

Neither Rep. Omar nor Hirsi responded to requests for comment on this story.
