Federal immigration agents have arrested a dozen individuals in Minneapolis as part of a broader enforcement operation this week that initially appeared to target Somali immigrants living in the United States illegally, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Despite early concerns that the operation specifically focused on the Somali community, ICE officials revealed Thursday that of the 12 people detained, fewer than half were Somali nationals. The arrests included five people from Somalia, six Mexican nationals, and one person from El Salvador.

Minneapolis-St. Paul, home to the nation’s largest Somali-American population, joins several other metropolitan areas recently targeted by the Trump administration for immigration enforcement operations. Similar crackdowns have occurred in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, North Carolina in recent weeks. Immigration authorities have also begun operations in New Orleans, where officials have indicated they intend to arrest as many as 5,000 individuals.

In an official statement, ICE characterized those arrested in Minneapolis as some of the “worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens.” The agency reported that eight of the 12 detainees had previous criminal histories, including charges or convictions for assault, fraud, domestic violence, and driving under the influence.

The enforcement action comes amid heightened tensions following President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Somali immigrants, whom he referred to as “garbage” and criticized for allegedly contributing nothing to American society. The president also directed accusations at Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz, claiming his administration allowed fraud in government programs that allegedly channeled money to a Somali militant group—allegations stemming from reports by a conservative publication.

The immigration operation has sparked significant pushback from local and state officials. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has publicly stated that city police would not participate in federal immigration enforcement activities, emphasizing the city’s commitment to protecting immigrant communities.

In response to this stance, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized both Mayor Frey and Governor Walz in the ICE statement, accusing them of failing to enforce immigration laws and thereby endangering citizens.

The situation highlights the growing tensions between federal immigration enforcement priorities and local governance in cities with significant immigrant populations. Community advocates have expressed concern about the impact of such operations on immigrant families and the potential for increased fear and distrust among vulnerable populations.

Immigration enforcement operations have intensified nationwide under the current administration, with ICE conducting targeted raids in major urban centers. Critics argue these operations often spread fear throughout immigrant communities, while supporters maintain they are necessary for public safety and national security.

The Minneapolis operation occurs against the backdrop of ongoing national debates about immigration policy, border security, and the treatment of asylum seekers. Minnesota’s Somali community, which has established deep roots in the Twin Cities over the past three decades, represents one of the most visible examples of refugee resettlement in the United States.

Local community organizations have mobilized to provide legal resources and support for those affected by the enforcement actions, while also working to disseminate accurate information to combat rumors and misinformation that often spread during such operations.

As the situation continues to unfold, both local officials and community leaders have emphasized the importance of protecting civil rights while addressing legitimate public safety concerns in a manner that respects the dignity of all residents, regardless of immigration status.

The Trump administration seems intent on ramping up immigration enforcement, even in communities far from the border. This operation in Minneapolis, which apparently included more Mexican and Salvadoran nationals than Somalis, suggests a broad crackdown rather than a targeted effort.

  4. Immigration is a complex and often polarizing issue. While the government has a responsibility to enforce the law, the details of this ICE operation raise questions about the fairness and efficacy of the agency’s tactics. Transparency and respect for civil liberties should be priorities.

I agree, a balanced and nuanced approach is needed. Enforcement actions that unfairly target specific ethnic or national groups are counterproductive and erode community trust in institutions.

  5. The details around this ICE operation seem rather murky. I’d be curious to know more about the specific charges and criminal histories of those arrested. Maintaining public safety is important, but immigration enforcement should be done thoughtfully and with transparency.
