The Department of Homeland Security’s internal watchdog has suspended numerous immigration enforcement oversight investigations as Democrats continue to withhold support for agency funding, creating a partial government shutdown that has paralyzed critical accountability mechanisms.
The DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) confirmed Wednesday that most of its audits and inspections have been paused during the shutdown, including at least seven internal probes into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conduct. This comes at a particularly sensitive moment, as Democrats have been calling for stricter oversight of federal immigration enforcement operations in urban centers.
“Most of OIG’s audits, inspections, and similar reviews are paused during the lapse in appropriations,” a spokesperson for the DHS inspector general told Fox News Digital. Only a small number of disaster relief-related audits are continuing because they have separate funding sources.
Among the suspended investigations is a critical review to determine “whether ICE investigates allegations of use of excessive force and holds personnel accountable.” Another paused probe involves unannounced inspections of ICE detention facilities to verify compliance with detention standards and ensure humane conditions of confinement.
The shutdown has also halted an investigation into whether Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents are conducting domestic operations in accordance with DHS policies and federal law—a particularly significant review following recent fatal incidents involving federal agents.
One such incident occurred in Minneapolis last month when CBP agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen and nurse, during an anti-ICE demonstration. This shooting, along with the ICE-involved killing of Renee Nicole Good, also in Minneapolis, were cited by Democrats as key reasons for rejecting an earlier bipartisan funding agreement for DHS.
The political standoff centers on immigration enforcement reform. While the original DHS funding bill that passed the House included new mandatory training requirements for ICE and a body camera mandate for federal law enforcement, Democratic leadership maintained these measures were insufficient.
Democrats have put forward additional demands that Republicans consider unacceptable, including requiring judicial warrants for ICE enforcement actions and prohibiting masks for ICE agents while mandating clearly accessible identification. Republicans have characterized these proposals as non-starters in negotiations.
The funding impasse extends beyond immigration oversight. Other critical DHS components affected by the shutdown include the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which manages airport security nationwide, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), responsible for disaster response.
While most oversight functions have ceased, the OIG spokesperson noted that “Criminal Investigators are excepted from furlough and are continuing their work during the lapse,” though the office would not “confirm or deny the existence of any particular criminal investigation.”
The shutdown comes amid President Donald Trump’s nationwide surge of federal immigration enforcement agents into major urban centers, a move that has intensified the political debate over immigration policy and enforcement tactics.
Despite the serious implications of the suspended oversight, there appears to be little movement toward resolution. Both parties have exchanged counteroffers this week, but significant gaps remain in their positions. Democrats and Republicans continue to be at odds over the appropriate level of restrictions and accountability measures for immigration enforcement operations.
As the shutdown continues, the pause in these oversight mechanisms raises questions about accountability for an agency that has been at the center of heated political debate, particularly in the wake of controversial enforcement actions and fatalities involving federal agents.
