California Lawmaker Calls for Prosecution of ICE Agent in Fatal Minneapolis Shooting

Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna of California has called for the arrest and prosecution of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis on January 7. The incident has ignited a fierce debate about federal immigration enforcement tactics and oversight.

“I am calling for the arrest and prosecution of the ICE agent that shot and killed Renee Good,” Khanna stated on social media platform X. The California representative, who previously served in the Obama administration, also urged Congress to support legislation he co-sponsored with Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) that would implement significant reforms to ICE operations.

The proposed bill would require ICE agents to wear body cameras, display visible identification, end the practice of wearing masks during operations, and subject the agency to independent oversight—measures that advocates argue could prevent similar incidents in the future.

Good was killed during a federal immigration enforcement operation in a residential area of south Minneapolis. According to federal officials, agents were attempting to make arrests when Good allegedly tried to use her vehicle as a weapon against officers, prompting an agent to fire in what ICE characterized as self-defense.

The shooting has sparked widespread protests across Minneapolis and other U.S. cities, with demonstrators demanding reform of federal immigration enforcement practices. Civil rights groups have questioned the tactics used by ICE during the operation and called for greater accountability.

Local officials have publicly challenged the federal account of the incident. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have both rejected claims that the officer acted in self-defense. The state of Minnesota has since filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming the immigration enforcement surge in the state is “unlawful” and “unprecedented.”

“What we are seeing right now is not normal immigration enforcement,” Mayor Frey said. “The scale is wildly disproportionate, and it has nothing to do with keeping people safe.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has pushed back forcefully against Minnesota’s legal action, accusing state leaders of undermining public safety and obstructing federal law enforcement. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has maintained that the agent fired in self-defense, defending the actions of federal officers involved in the operation.

“These law enforcement officers are trained to be in situations that are dangerous, and they rely on that training each and every day to make the right decisions,” Noem said during an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

The controversy highlights growing tensions between federal immigration authorities and state and local officials in areas that have adopted more protective stances toward immigrant communities. It comes amid a broader national debate about immigration enforcement priorities and tactics under the current administration.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which typically investigates officer-involved shootings in the state, initially agreed to investigate the incident but later withdrew from the case, further complicating efforts to determine exactly what happened during the fatal encounter.

Rep. Khanna’s call for prosecution represents one of the strongest responses from a federal lawmaker to the incident. His proposed legislation, if enacted, would represent a significant shift in how ICE conducts operations, with new transparency and accountability measures that could reshape the agency’s approach to enforcement actions in communities across the country.

As investigations continue and legal challenges progress through the courts, the case has become a flashpoint in the ongoing national conversation about immigration enforcement, police accountability, and the balance between federal authority and local oversight in matters of public safety.
