The House Homeland Security Committee is set to examine the potential connection between anti-law enforcement rhetoric and the alarming rise in violence against law enforcement officers, particularly Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The hearing, scheduled for December 3rd, comes amid a concerning surge in attacks targeting federal immigration officials.

“It is unacceptable that the brave men and women of law enforcement, who risk their lives daily to secure the homeland and protect the public, are facing targeted violence from radicals and international gangs on U.S. soil,” said House Homeland Security Committee Chair Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) in a statement.

The hearing, titled “When Badges Become Targets: How Anti-Law Enforcement Rhetoric Fuels Violence Against Officers,” will feature testimony from key law enforcement representatives including Michael Hughes from the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, Patrick Yoes of the Fraternal Order of Police, and Jonathan Thompson from the National Sheriffs’ Association.

The Department of Homeland Security reported in July that assaults against ICE officers and other federal immigration agents have skyrocketed by nearly 700% compared to the previous year. While only 10 assault incidents were reported between January and June 2024, that number jumped dramatically to 79 reported assaults during the same period in 2025.

Several violent incidents have underscored this troubling trend. In July, an Alvarado Police Department officer was shot in the neck near ICE’s Prairieland Detention Facility in Texas. Last week, five individuals pleaded guilty to terrorism-related charges connected to that attack.

More recently, in September, a shooter opened fire at an ICE facility in Dallas, resulting in two detainee fatalities. The FBI classified the incident as a “targeted attack” against ICE, and DHS investigators discovered shell casings with “anti-ICE” messages at the scene.

Rep. August Pfluger, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee’s counterterrorism and intelligence subcommittee, emphasized the severity of the situation: “The recent deadly shooting at a Dallas ICE facility wasn’t an isolated attack — it was part of a broader pattern of violence spurred on by anti-law enforcement rhetoric and heightened political extremism perpetrated by radicals on the Left.”

The escalating violence against federal immigration officers has sparked debate about the impact of political rhetoric on public safety. The White House has previously urged Democrats to moderate their language regarding ICE as the administration implements its immigration enforcement policies.

Some Democratic lawmakers have faced criticism for their characterization of federal immigration authorities. In June, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) drew controversy when she described ICE as acting “like a terrorist force.” Despite pressure from the White House to apologize, Jayapal later defended her comments during a CNN interview.

Garbarino emphasized the need for congressional action: “With assaults against officers skyrocketing and heightened threats of political violence across America, Congress must support the mission of law enforcement and ensure our federal agencies have the tools, resources, and partnerships needed to keep these dedicated professionals safe on the job as they work to protect our communities.”

The upcoming hearing represents a significant step toward addressing what many see as a dangerous trend of targeted violence against federal law enforcement. As political tensions around immigration enforcement remain high, the committee aims to explore whether inflammatory rhetoric contributes to an environment where law enforcement officers increasingly find themselves in harm’s way.

Law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups have expressed growing concern about officer safety amid the polarized national debate on immigration policy and border security. The hearing is expected to examine both the statistical increase in attacks and potential contributing factors, including the impact of public discourse on the safety of those tasked with enforcing immigration laws.
