House Democrats File Impeachment Articles Against Secretary of War Hegseth
House Democrats filed formal articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Wednesday, accusing the Trump Cabinet member of abusing his office and committing war crimes during ongoing military operations in Iran and elsewhere.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., introduced six articles of impeachment with the support of 12 other House Democrats, marking a significant escalation in congressional scrutiny of the administration’s military actions.
“Pete Hegseth broke his oath to the Constitution, put U.S. troops at grave risk through the unauthorized disclosure of classified information, engaged in abuse of office and conduct beneath the dignity of his office, and carried out unlawful military actions despite his obligation to refuse — including strikes on civilians and a girls’ school in Minab, Iran,” Ansari stated when announcing the resolution.
The impeachment articles focus on several serious allegations. The first article accuses Hegseth of conducting an “unauthorized war against Iran” without seeking formal congressional approval, a longstanding constitutional tension point between the executive and legislative branches. This charge also alleges the secretary recklessly endangered U.S. service members by approving ground operations that involved “extreme and unnecessary risks.”
The second article deals with alleged violations of international humanitarian law, specifically targeting civilians in military operations. Democrats point to the bombing of a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, which reportedly resulted in significant civilian casualties, as well as controversial “double tap” strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean.
A third article addresses the mishandling of sensitive military information. The resolution cites an incident where Hegseth and other officials allegedly used Signal, an encrypted messaging app, to discuss active strikes in Yemen but inadvertently included a magazine editor in the conversation. This security breach raised significant concerns about operational security protocols within the Department of War.
The remaining three articles accuse Hegseth of obstructing congressional oversight, politicizing the armed forces, and bringing “disrepute” upon the United States military through his actions.
Rep. Ansari recently appeared at a memorial on Capitol grounds featuring 168 pairs of shoes representing those reportedly killed in a U.S. strike on an Iranian school in March 2026, underscoring the human toll that forms part of the impeachment case.
The Pentagon quickly responded to the impeachment effort. Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson dismissed the move as “just another charade” by Democrats attempting to “distract the American people from the major successes” of the Department of War.
“Secretary Hegseth will continue to protect the homeland and project peace through strength,” Wilson stated in an email to Fox News Digital, defending the administration’s military actions as having “decisively and overwhelmingly achieved the President’s objectives in Iran.”
The impeachment push comes amid growing tensions between Congress and the executive branch over war powers. The Biden administration had previously faced criticism for military actions conducted without explicit congressional authorization, but the scale and intensity of operations under the current administration have heightened these concerns.
Military analysts note that the impeachment effort, while unlikely to succeed in the current political environment, reflects deeper questions about civilian control of the military and the proper authorization of force in modern conflicts. The controversy also highlights the increasingly partisan nature of oversight regarding military operations.
The Democrats who joined Ansari in sponsoring the resolution include Representatives Sarah McBride (Delaware), Lauren Underwood (Illinois), Al Green (Texas), Steve Cohen (Tennessee), Jasmine Crockett (Texas), Nikema Williams (Georgia), Dina Titus (Nevada), Dave Min (California), Shri Thanedar (Michigan), Melanie Stansbury (New Mexico), Mike Quigley (Illinois), and Brittany Pettersen (Colorado).
As tensions with Iran continue and military operations proceed, the impeachment effort adds another layer of political complexity to an already contentious foreign policy landscape.
