House Democrats Launch Investigation into FBI Director Kash Patel Following Controversial Report

House Democrats have initiated an investigation into FBI Director Kash Patel following allegations published in The Atlantic that claim he “alarmed colleagues” with excessive drinking and erratic behavior on the job.

Led by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have demanded that Patel complete a 10-question assessment identifying “hazardous drinking behaviors” under penalty of perjury. In their letter sent Tuesday evening, lawmakers expressed serious concerns about the FBI director’s alleged conduct.

“These glimpses of your relationship to alcohol would be alarming to see in an FBI agent; for us to see them in the FBI Director himself is shocking and indicative of a public emergency,” the lawmakers wrote.

Patel has categorically denied the allegations and announced a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic and reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick. During a joint press conference with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Patel asserted he has “never been intoxicated on the job.”

“I can say unequivocally that I never listen to the fake news mafia, and as when they get louder, it just means I’m doing my job,” Patel stated.

The Atlantic’s story, which relies entirely on anonymous sources, describes an alleged “emotional outburst” by Patel after being logged out of his computer and multiple instances where officials claimed the FBI director engaged in excessive drinking that reportedly made it difficult to wake him up.

In addition to demanding information directly from Patel, Raskin sent a separate letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, calling on the Republican leader to require Patel to testify under oath if he fails to provide the requested information.

Jordan’s office dismissed the Democrats’ request as politically motivated. “Crime is down to record-low levels. Criminals are behind bars, and America is safer thanks to the leadership of President Trump and Director Patel,” a spokesperson for the committee Republicans told Fox News Digital. “This is just another unserious effort from anonymous sources and partisan actors to attack the President and his Administration.”

The brewing controversy highlights the increasingly polarized nature of oversight in Washington, with law enforcement leadership becoming a flashpoint in partisan battles. The FBI, which typically maintains a reputation for political neutrality, now finds its director at the center of a highly charged dispute.

Patel’s lawsuit claims “actual malice” on the part of The Atlantic, stating: “Defendants are of course free to criticize the leadership of the FBI, but they crossed the legal line by publishing an article replete with false and obviously fabricated allegations designed to destroy Director Patel’s reputation and drive him from office.”

The Atlantic has defended its reporting, calling Patel’s lawsuit “meritless.” The publication stands by its story despite the significant pushback from Patel and Trump administration officials.

Acting Attorney General Blanche expressed “a lot of concerns” with the anonymous sourcing in the report, though he admitted he had not read it. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided a statement of support to The Atlantic, saying “Director Patel remains a critical player on the administration’s law and order team.”

This controversy emerges as Patel has been highlighting the FBI’s record on crime reduction during his tenure. The former Trump administration official has been a controversial figure since his appointment, having previously served in various national security roles during Trump’s first term.

As the investigation unfolds, the dispute raises significant questions about media accountability, the use of anonymous sources in reporting on public officials, and the appropriate mechanisms for congressional oversight of law enforcement leadership.
