Beijing’s Military Drills Around Taiwan Draw Bipartisan Congressional Rebuke

Bipartisan lawmakers on the Select Committee on China issued a stern warning to Beijing on Tuesday, condemning China’s escalating military exercises around Taiwan as a “deliberate escalation” that threatens regional stability.

Committee Chairman Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) released a joint statement criticizing the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s live-fire drills, which have surrounded Taiwan on all four sides with an unprecedented show of military force.

“These drills are intended to intimidate Taiwan and other democracies in the region and to undermine peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific,” the lawmakers stated, highlighting rare cross-party agreement on what they view as aggressive Chinese behavior.

The military exercises, which began Tuesday and are scheduled to last two days, represent one of China’s largest displays of military power in the Taiwan Strait. The operations have included firing rockets into international waters surrounding Taiwan, while deploying a significant array of military assets including amphibious assault ships, bombers, drones, and naval vessels.

The scale of the drills has disrupted international air traffic in the region, with numerous flights grounded or rerouted for safety concerns. Chinese forces have effectively encircled the island, conducting operations in the waters and airspace on all sides of Taiwan.

While such military demonstrations near Taiwan aren’t unprecedented, the comprehensive nature of the current exercises has raised alarms among U.S. officials about Beijing’s intentions and capabilities. China considers Taiwan part of its sovereign territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring the self-governing island under its control.

President Donald Trump downplayed concerns about the exercises on Monday, telling reporters he was not worried about China’s display of force. “I have a great relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping,” Trump noted, adding that China has conducted similar naval and military exercises in the region for two decades.

However, the House Select Committee took a more confrontational stance. “By rehearsing coercive military scenarios and projecting force beyond its borders, the Chinese Communist Party is seeking to reshape the regional order through aggression and intimidation,” the committee asserted.

The drills come amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing across multiple fronts, including trade disputes, technology competition, and diplomatic disagreements over Taiwan’s status. The United States maintains a policy of “strategic ambiguity” toward Taiwan, selling defensive weapons to the island while acknowledging Beijing’s position that there is only one China.

Regional security experts have noted that such military demonstrations often coincide with political developments in Taiwan or shifts in U.S. policy. Taiwan recently inaugurated its new president, Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a separatist and “troublemaker.”

U.S. lawmakers emphasized their continued support for Taiwan in the face of these provocations. “The United States stands with Taiwan and fellow democracies and will continue to work with partners to preserve Taiwan’s security and uphold a free, open, and stable Indo-Pacific,” their statement concluded.

The U.S. response reflects growing bipartisan concern in Washington about China’s military ambitions in the region and highlights the strategic importance of Taiwan in U.S.-China relations. Defense analysts suggest these exercises also provide valuable insights into China’s evolving military capabilities and operational strategies, particularly regarding potential blockade or invasion scenarios involving Taiwan.

As tensions persist, regional allies including Japan, Australia, and the Philippines are closely monitoring developments, concerned that escalations could undermine decades of relative stability in the western Pacific.
