In a significant development amidst allegations of widespread fraud, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday it will suspend all child care payments to Minnesota, citing concerns over the misuse of federal funds intended for daycare centers across the state.

“We believe the state of Minnesota has allowed scammers and fake daycares to siphon millions of taxpayer dollars over the past decade,” HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill stated in a video message shared on social media. The announcement follows the release of a viral investigative video by independent journalist Nick Shirley that documented numerous childcare facilities allegedly receiving government funding despite appearing non-operational.

The HHS Administration for Children and Families currently provides Minnesota with approximately $185 million annually in child care funds. These resources are intended to support roughly 19,000 children, including infants and toddlers, according to Assistant Secretary Alex Adams.

“Any dollars stolen by fraudsters is stolen from those children,” Adams emphasized in his statement addressing the situation.

The federal agency is implementing multiple measures to address the alleged fraud. Beyond freezing payments to Minnesota, HHS will now require justification and receipt or photographic evidence for all Administration for Children and Families payments nationwide before releasing funds to states.

Additionally, the department is demanding that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz provide a comprehensive audit of the daycare centers featured in Shirley’s exposé. The requested documentation includes attendance records, licenses, complaints, investigations, and inspection reports. HHS has also established a dedicated hotline for reporting related fraud cases.

The decision represents one of the most significant federal interventions into a state’s childcare system in recent years and highlights growing concerns about accountability in government assistance programs.

Governor Walz’s office quickly responded to the announcement, characterizing the federal move as politically motivated. “The governor has been combating fraud for years while the President has been letting fraudsters out of jail,” a spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “Fraud is a serious issue. But this is a transparent attempt to politicize the issue to hurt Minnesotans and defund government programs that help people.”

Walz himself posted on social media platform X, suggesting the payment freeze was part of President Donald Trump’s “long game” strategy. “We’ve spent years cracking down on fraudsters. It’s a serious issue – but this has been his plan all along,” Walz wrote. “He’s politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans.”

The allegations come at a particularly sensitive time for childcare programs nationwide, as many facilities continue to struggle with post-pandemic recovery, staffing shortages, and rising operational costs. The Minnesota situation also raises broader questions about oversight of federal assistance programs and the systems in place to prevent misappropriation of funds.

Adams revealed that in a conversation with the head of Minnesota’s Child Care Services office on Monday, the state official “could not tell me with confidence whether those allegations of fraud are isolated or whether there’s fraud stretching statewide.”

The case highlights the tensions between federal and state oversight responsibilities and the challenges of ensuring accountability in programs serving vulnerable populations. Child advocacy groups have not yet issued formal statements regarding the payment freeze, though many will likely be monitoring how the situation affects legitimate childcare providers and the families they serve.

As the investigation unfolds, the impact on Minnesota’s childcare infrastructure remains uncertain, with potential consequences for both providers and families dependent on these services across the state.
