Secretary of War Hegseth Criticizes Senator Kelly Over Uniform Display Amid Misconduct Review

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has publicly rebuked Senator Mark Kelly, Democrat of Arizona, for allegedly displaying his military uniform incorrectly in a social media post, escalating tensions during an ongoing Department of War investigation into the senator’s conduct.

“So ‘Captain’ Kelly, not only did your sedition video intentionally undercut good order & discipline…but you can’t even display your uniform correctly,” Hegseth wrote on social media platform X. “Your medals are out of order & rows reversed. When/if you are recalled to active duty, it’ll start with a uniform inspection.”

The exchange comes just one day after the Pentagon announced a formal review into allegations of misconduct against Kelly related to a controversial video in which he and other lawmakers called on service members to “refuse illegal orders.” The Department of War stated it might recall Kelly to active duty to face potential court-martial proceedings or other administrative actions under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The Pentagon issued a statement explaining, “This matter will be handled in compliance with military law, ensuring due process and impartiality,” while noting that further comments would be limited to protect the integrity of the proceedings.

Kelly had posted a picture of his uniform on X alongside a detailed account of his military service, writing: “When I was 22 years old, I commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and swore an oath to the Constitution.” His post outlined his extensive military and NASA career, including “flight school, multiple deployments on the USS Midway, 39 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm, test pilot school, four space shuttle flights at NASA.”

The senator further described experiencing combat situations where he “had a missile blow up next to my jet and flew through anti-aircraft fire to drop bombs on enemy targets,” and highlighted his command of the space shuttle and participation in recovery missions following the Columbia disaster.

The public confrontation reflects growing tensions between the current administration and certain lawmakers over military protocols and civilian oversight. Reports indicate the FBI is scheduling interviews with six lawmakers who encouraged military members to refuse what they termed “illegal orders,” though specifics about these alleged illegal directives have not been clearly established.

In response to the investigation, Kelly issued a defiant statement: “If this is meant to intimidate me and other members of Congress from doing our jobs and holding this administration accountable, it won’t work. I’ve given too much to this country to be silenced by bullies who care more about their own power than protecting the Constitution.”

The dispute highlights increasingly fraught relations between military leadership and congressional oversight, with fundamental questions about the chain of command and appropriate channels for expressing concerns about military directives taking center stage.

Military law experts note that the Department of War’s unusual step of potentially recalling a retired officer for disciplinary action demonstrates the seriousness with which military leadership views statements that could be interpreted as encouraging insubordination within the ranks.

Senator Kelly, a retired Navy captain who later became an astronaut before entering politics, has maintained a prominent voice on military and veterans affairs in Congress. His wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, survived an assassination attempt in 2011 while serving her constituents, an event Kelly referenced in his defense of his patriotism and service record.

Kelly’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Secretary Hegseth’s criticism of his uniform display.
